Whether you are a Bay Area engineer checking on parents in a Sha Tin high-rise, a New Yorker confirming a fitting with a Tsim Sha Tsui tailor, or a grandchild in Queens calling a grandmother who still answers the home phone, reaching Hong Kong takes eight digits after +852 and a little help getting past its anti-scam screening.

To reach a Hong Kong number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.
011 852 5123 4567
From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +852 5123 4567 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.
Numbers in Hong Kong carry no leading trunk digit, so there is nothing to strip. 5123 4567 is dialed exactly as written, with +852 in front. Removing a digit here is what makes the call fail.
A Hong Kong mobile number is 8 digits after +852. If a call does not connect, count the digits first.
Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 852 and the number stay exactly the same.
A ~ means wait for the second dial tone before dialing the rest. It is not a digit you press.

The US corridor rests on a long Cantonese-speaking migration: the American Community Survey counted 242,493 Hong Kong-born residents in 2024, with 102,667 in California and 37,317 in New York State; by metro area the largest communities are New York (44,682), San Francisco-Oakland (42,104), Los Angeles (34,789) and San Jose (10,057), followed by Seattle, Boston and Chicago - US Census Bureau. Earlier arrivals settled in the Chinatowns of Manhattan, San Francisco and Los Angeles after 1965; a later, highly skilled wave around the 1997 handover moved into Silicon Valley suburbs - Hong Kong Americans. Those are the adult children calling parents in Sha Tin, Tuen Mun or North Point, usually on a 2xxx or 3xxx home line or a 5, 6 or 9 mobile.
Business adds a second layer. Hong Kong bought $33.7 billion of US goods in 2025 while the US imported $5.1 billion from it, a US goods surplus of $28.5 billion - US Census Bureau, so exporters, freight forwarders, hotels and banks trade constant calls with offices in Central and Kwun Tong. Outside the US, the newest large corridor is Britain: since the British National (Overseas) route opened on 31 January 2021, 187,552 BN(O) visas have been granted to people applying from outside the UK - GOV.UK, creating a new generation of families ringing home from across the country.
Hong Kong's standard international prefix is 001, which the numbering plan allocates to every operator for voice calls, so it works from any line; carriers also run their own gateway codes such as 006 (PCCW-HKT), 008 (HGC), 009 (HKBN Enterprise Solutions) and 0030 (HKBN) - OFCA Numbering Plan. A Hong Kong landline therefore calls the US as 001 1 plus the 10-digit number; on a mobile, people just use +1. Calls to mainland China (+86) and Macau (+853) are international calls too, even though Shenzhen is just across the river.
The regulator's traffic data shows where those calls go and how far the habit has faded. Outgoing international traffic fell to 560.6 million minutes in 2025, from 7.76 billion in 2009 - OFCA, with much of the city's voice traffic now carried by messaging apps instead. Of what remains, the Chinese mainland took 305.4 million minutes, more than half, followed by Indonesia (21.3 million), the Philippines (14.0 million) and the United States (10.9 million) - OFCA. The Indonesian and Filipino volumes largely reflect the city's 368,000 foreign domestic helpers, 55% of them from the Philippines and 42% from Indonesia - Legislative Council.
From a US or Canadian landline, dial the exit code 011. On a mobile phone or in a browser dialer, type + instead.
Dial Hong Kong's country code, 852.
Dial the 8-digit number exactly as written, with no area code: for example 5123 4567 for a mobile or 2123 4567 for a landline, giving 011 852 5123 4567.
Count before you press call: mobiles and landlines always have 8 digits after the country code, while 800 freephone numbers have 9 and may not accept calls from abroad.
Hong Kong has no trunk prefix and no area codes, so what you dial after +852 is exactly the 8 digits your contact writes down. Do not add a 0, and do not add 86 in front: +86 is mainland China and +853 is Macau. A landline with only 7 digits predates the 1995 change that put a 2 in front of every fixed number. 800 freephone numbers are 9 digits and belong to domestic fixed services, so dial the organization's 8-digit line instead. Expect the person you call to see a + before your number, the flag Hong Kong mobiles put on every call from abroad - OFCA.
Hong Kong phones announce foreign calls, and people act on it. Since 21 August 2015, operators must show a + sign in front of every incoming mobile call that originates outside Hong Kong, even when the caller ID imitates a local number - OFCA. Since 1 May 2023, every mobile network also plays or texts an alert, "Call is from outside Hong Kong. Beware of deception.", in Cantonese, Putonghua and English before connecting an overseas call that displays a +852 number - HKSAR Government. In practice, your US number shows up as a foreign +1 call, and a Hong Kong number used from abroad (a roaming SIM or a virtual number) triggers the warning, so either way the person you call knows it comes from overseas.
The reason is the sheer volume of fraud. Police recorded 43,212 deception cases in 2025, nearly half of all reported crime, with losses of about HK$8.1 billion; telephone deception alone accounted for 8,621 cases - HKSAR Government. The pattern that most affects family calls is the "Guess who" scam: the caller will not say who they are, waits for the victim to guess a name, then borrows that identity to ask for money - ADCC. Cases against elderly victims rose 58.1% in 2025 - ADCC, so a grandparent who hears "Guess who?" from an unfamiliar number may simply hang up. Say your name first, and send a WhatsApp message before you call. Many residents also check unknown numbers in the police Scameter database, which covers phone numbers, websites and payment accounts - CyberDefender; the same police year review counted 1.15 million downloads of its app by the end of 2025.
Old prepaid numbers may simply be dead. Under real-name registration, unregistered prepaid SIM cards could not be used after 23 February 2023, and the scheme was fully implemented the next day - HKSAR Government. If a number you have not called since 2022 now fails, ask for the person's registered line rather than redialing. Language is the last hurdle: in a government survey, 92.3% of residents aged 6 to 65 used Cantonese most often at home, and only 43.6% rated their spoken English as sufficient for daily use - Census and Statistics Department, so a call to a home landline will usually be answered in Cantonese.
Hong Kong runs a closed 8-digit plan administered by the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA), whose numbering plan (issue of 1 September 2026) sorts every range by its first digit: 2 and 3 for fixed networks, and 4 to 9 mainly for mobiles, with carve-outs for pagers, freephone, personal numbers and VoIP-style Class 2 service - OFCA Numbering Plan. Area codes disappeared on 30 December 1989, and on 1 January 1995 a 2 was put in front of every landline, which is why fixed numbers read 2xxx xxxx; numbers starting 3 came later, when 2 ran short - Wikipedia. An old address book with a 7-digit landline predates that change.
Mobiles went through the same squeeze. Cellphones started on 9, then took 6, then 5 from May 2008, and in February 2018 the government released about 10.6 million new mobile numbers beginning 4, 7 and 8 to sit alongside 5, 6 and 9 - HKSAR Government. A number such as 4608 xxxx or 8410 xxxx is a normal mobile, not a typo. Customers have been able to keep their number when switching network since 1 March 1999 - OFCA, and in March 2026 alone 50,987 numbers moved between networks - OFCA, so the prefix says nothing about the carrier.
Hong Kong has its own country code, +852, and its own numbering plan. From a Hong Kong phone, a call to Shenzhen or Guangzhou is an international call to +86, and a call to Macau goes to +853 - Wikipedia. The same logic applies from the US: a relative's number that begins +86 is on a mainland network, however close to Hong Kong they live, and it follows mainland dialing rules rather than Hong Kong's 8-digit pattern.
The apps split along the same line. WhatsApp is used by 70.6% of Hong Kong social media users aged 16 and over, while WeChat, the mainland's dominant messenger, reaches 49.4%, mostly people with personal or business ties across the boundary - Meltwater. A mainland relative may answer WeChat faster than a phone call; a Hong Kong one is more likely to be on WhatsApp. Mainland-owned networks such as China Mobile Hong Kong and China Unicom (Hong Kong) hold Hong Kong number blocks like any local carrier, so their customers have ordinary 8-digit +852 numbers. If your contact carries two phones, one +852 and one +86, dial the one for the side of the border they are on today.
Hong Kong has not abandoned the home phone: 56.4% of households still had a residential fixed line in May 2026 - OFCA, so a 2xxx or 3xxx number is often the surest way to reach an older parent in the evening. Businesses lean the same way, publishing ordinary 8-digit lines that work from anywhere. HSBC, for example, lists its personal banking hotline as (852) 2233 3000 - HSBC Hong Kong, which you dial from the US as +852 2233 3000.
Freephone is different. Hong Kong 800 numbers are 9 digits (800 plus six) and are filed under domestic fixed services in the numbering plan - OFCA Numbering Plan, so reaching one from abroad is not guaranteed; look for the organization's 8-digit number instead. Short codes such as 999 for police, fire and ambulance and the police anti-scam line 18222 are local codes. The notable exception is the Immigration Department's 24-hour hotline for Hong Kong residents in trouble outside the city, (852) 1868, which is meant to be dialed from abroad; if it does not connect, the department suggests adding 0000 after 1868 - Immigration Department.
Because Hong Kong runs 12 or 13 hours ahead of New York, a US Friday evening is already Saturday morning there, and a US Sunday evening is Monday morning. To catch an office, call between 9pm and midnight ET from Sunday to Thursday during US summer time, which is 9am to noon on a Hong Kong working day.
The lunar calendar moves the big closures. The government has gazetted Lunar New Year 2027 as 6, 8 and 9 February (the fourth day replaces the second, which falls on a Sunday), with the day after Mid-Autumn Festival on 16 September 2027 and Chung Yeung on 8 October 2027 - HKSAR Government. Expect offices, banks and many shops to shut on those days. For families the same dates are the moments a call from abroad is expected, so agree on a time by message first.
+852. Hong Kong has its own country code and numbering plan; +86 belongs to mainland China and +853 to Macau, and calls between the three are international calls - Wikipedia. From the US you dial 011 852 (or +852 on a mobile) followed by the 8-digit number. If a contact's number begins +86, they are on a mainland network, even if they live near the border.
No. Hong Kong abolished area codes on 30 December 1989, and since 1995 every landline has had 8 digits - Wikipedia. Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories all dial the same way, so from the US you dial +852 and the 8 digits exactly as written. There is no leading 0 to handle, which makes Hong Kong one of the simpler places to dial.
Look at the first digit. Numbers starting 2 or 3 are fixed lines; numbers starting 5, 6 or 9 are mobiles, and since 2018 mobile numbers also start with 4, 7 or 8 - HKSAR Government. Both types have 8 digits. Because numbers have been portable between networks since 1999, the digits do not reveal the carrier.
Hong Kong mobiles mark every call from abroad with a +, and overseas calls showing a +852 number trigger the alert "Call is from outside Hong Kong. Beware of deception." - HKSAR Government. OFCA tells residents to be on guard whenever the + appears - OFCA. Send a WhatsApp message first saying which number you will call from, and give your name at once rather than asking them to guess.
Hong Kong stays on UTC+8 all year and has not used summer time since 1979 - Hong Kong Observatory. It is 12 hours ahead of New York and 15 ahead of Los Angeles from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, and 13 and 16 hours ahead the rest of the year, because only US clocks change.
Do not count on it. Hong Kong 800 numbers are 9-digit freephone lines that OFCA's numbering plan files under domestic fixed services, so an international connection is not guaranteed. Look for the organization's ordinary 8-digit number instead; HSBC, for example, lists its personal banking hotline as (852) 2233 3000 - HSBC Hong Kong, which you can dial from abroad like any landline.
