The single loudest corridor into Kenya is the United States, which alone sends 50 to 55 percent of all diaspora remittances home, over Sh405 billion in the year to May 2025 - Business Daily. The roughly 157,000 Kenyan-born people in the US - Mwakilishi cluster in very specific places, and those are the places calls originate: Dallas-Fort Worth (about 7,700 Kenyans, the densest concentration in the country), Minneapolis-St. Paul, the Washington, D.C. and Maryland suburbs, Seattle, and the New York City metro - Tuko. Texas, Minnesota, Washington, California and Massachusetts hold the biggest state populations. A nurse in Minneapolis calling her mother in Nyeri, a rideshare driver in Dallas checking on a plot in Kiambu, a student near D.C. calling a cousin in Kisumu: that is the traffic.
Beyond the US, the corridor map has shifted hard. Germany is now Kenya's second-largest source at around Sh86 billion, ahead of (Sh62.6bn), and the Gulf, where and host large numbers of Kenyan domestic and construction workers, sits close behind - . The trunk 0 on every number written inside Kenya (0722, 020) is a national dialling prefix and must be dropped when calling from abroad - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. Mobiles are always 9 digits after +254 and begin with 7 or, since 2019, 1. Landlines vary: a Nairobi (20) or Mombasa (41) number can be shorter than a mobile, since the national number runs a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 9 digits - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. Do not try to dial numbers, short codes, or the emergency lines from abroad; they only route inside Kenya.
Kenya's numbering plan changed under people's feet, and it still trips up callers. Every mobile prefix used to begin with 7, but by May 2019 the 7-series was exhausted, so the Communications Authority of Kenya opened a parallel 1-series starting with 01 - Kenyan Wallstreet. A number like 0112 345 678 looks wrong to anyone who remembers the old days, but it is a perfectly valid mobile: from abroad it is +254 112 345 678. The reverse mistake is common too: people assume a leading 1 means a landline area code, when a Kenyan landline area code is a short block like 20 or 41, never 01.
Portability confusion compounds it. Kenya has had mobile number portability since April 2011 - Wikipedia, so the old habit of reading the network off the prefix (0722 means Safaricom, 0733 means Airtel) no longer holds. A 0722 number may have been ported to Airtel or Telkom years ago. It does not change how you dial, but it does mean you cannot infer someone's carrier, and a "call any Safaricom number free" promo does not necessarily apply to that number anymore.
A full Kenyan number is the country code +254 followed by a National Significant Number that runs a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 9 digits - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. Mobiles are the easy case: always 9 digits after +254, always starting 7 or 1. Written locally they carry a trunk 0 (0722 123 456); from abroad you drop that 0 and dial +254 722 123 456.
Landlines are where the length varies. The area code is short (20 for Nairobi, 41 for Mombasa) and the subscriber number that follows can be shorter than a mobile, which is why a Kenyan landline can total fewer than nine digits while a mobile is always nine - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. The safe rule: if it starts with 7 or 1 after the code, it is a mobile and it has nine digits; if it starts with a small two-digit code like 20, 41, 51 or 57, it is a landline. Either way, the trunk 0 is national plumbing that never travels across the border.
Kenya's geographic codes map cleanly onto the country's regions. Nairobi is 20, the busiest by far, covering government offices, banks and corporate HQs. The coast runs on 41 for Mombasa (and Mariakani and Kilifi), 42 for Malindi and Lamu, and 40 for Kwale and Ukunda - CA Kenya Numbering Plan.
Up-country, the Rift Valley and western Kenya each have their own: 51 for Nakuru (with Njoro and Molo), 53 for Eldoret (plus Kapsabet, Iten and Kabarnet), 57 for Kisumu and Siaya, 52 for Kericho and Bomet, and 54 for Kitale and Lodwar - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. In daily life these landlines matter mostly for offices, schools and hospitals; family is reached on a mobile.
Even with portability blurring things, the original allocations still explain the numbers you see. On the classic 7-series, Safaricom holds 700-729, 740-748, 757-759, 768-769 and 790-799; Airtel holds 730-739, 750-756, 762, 767 and 780-789; Telkom Kenya holds 770-779 - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. The newer 1-series follows the same logic: Airtel took 100-108 and Safaricom took 110-117 - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. None of this changes how you dial, and thanks to portability it no longer reliably tells you who carries the call. But it does explain why a friend's brand-new SIM might read 0110 or 0106: those are simply the next generation of Kenyan mobile numbers, not a typo.
The practical reality of calling Kenya is that you are almost always calling a mobile, because that is how the country works. Even an elder in a rural county keeps a Safaricom line for M-Pesa, so the number your relatives give you will be a +254 7XX or +254 1XX mobile, not a landline. Landlines survive mainly in institutions: a +254 20 number is what you dial for a Nairobi bank branch, a ministry, a private hospital or a school office.
When you do need a Kenyan business or bank from the US, ignore the 0800 care line on its website (that toll-free number will not connect internationally) and look for its direct +254 20 switchboard or a listed mobile - CA Kenya Numbering Plan. For an elder who is wary of scam calls, the smoothest path is a heads-up on WhatsApp, then a clean voice call to their mobile through the browser, which rings as a normal call they can simply answer with nothing to install on their end.
Kenya sits on East Africa Time, UTC+3, and does not observe daylight saving - Wild Springs. Because the US does shift for DST, the gap flexes a little through the year, but the working numbers are: 7 to 8 hours ahead of New York, and 10 to 11 ahead of Los Angeles. Nairobi does not move, so all the adjustment is on the US side.
That makes US mornings golden. A 9am call from the East Coast reaches Nairobi around 5pm, when people are wrapping up the day and free to talk; noon in New York is early evening in Kenya, still good. From the West Coast, aim early: 8am in Los Angeles is roughly 6 to 7pm in Kenya. The trap is the US evening, which is deep night in Kenya, so a 9pm New York call rings someone at 4 or 5 in the morning.
