From Kiwis in Brisbane ringing parents in Christchurch to an American family calling a daughter who settled in Wellington, calling New Zealand means dropping one 0 and remembering that when it is afternoon in the US, it is already tomorrow morning in Auckland.

To reach a New Zealand number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.
011 64 21 123 4567
From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +64 21 123 4567 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.
Numbers in New Zealand are written locally with a 0 in front, like 021 123 4567. Calling from abroad you leave that 0 out, so it becomes +64 21 123 4567.
Mobile numbers in New Zealand are not all the same length (this example has 9 digits after +64), so a different count is not a mistake in itself. If a call does not connect, check the start of the number against the rule above.
Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 64 and the number stay exactly the same.
A ~ means wait for the second dial tone before dialing the rest. It is not a digit you press.

The busiest line into New Zealand runs across the Tasman. About 638,000 people born in New Zealand lived in Australia in mid-2025, the fourth-largest overseas-born group there, and at the 2021 census New Zealand was the most common overseas birthplace in Queensland - Australian Bureau of Statistics. A call from Brisbane, Sydney or Perth to an 09 number in Auckland or an 03 number in Christchurch is the classic Kiwi family call.
From the US the corridor is smaller but steady. About 20,500 Americans report New Zealander ancestry - US Census Bureau, ACS 2024, and the 2018 census counted 27,678 US-born residents in New Zealand - Wikipedia, so parents in the US calling children who settled in Wellington or Queenstown are a real lane, alongside business calls, students and travelers booking lodges and campervans. New Zealand is also a Pacific hub: the 2023 census counted 213,069 people of Samoan ethnicity, 97,824 Tongan and 94,176 Cook Islands Māori - Wikipedia, with extended families spread between Auckland, Apia, Nuku'alofa and Rarotonga.
New Zealanders dial out with 00, or + on a mobile - Wikipedia. So the US is 00 1 and Australia 00 61. Where Kiwis call follows who lives in New Zealand: the most common overseas birthplaces at the 2018 census were England (210,915), China (132,906), India (117,348), Australia (75,696), South Africa (71,382), the Philippines (67,632), Fiji (62,310) and Samoa (55,512) - Wikipedia. Family calls out of New Zealand follow the same map.
One Pacific quirk surprises people. The Cook Islands and Niue are self-governing states in free association with New Zealand, and most people born there before 2006 are New Zealand citizens - Wikipedia. Yet each has its own country code, +682 for the Cook Islands and +683 for Niue, so a call from Auckland to Rarotonga is an international call even when both people hold New Zealand passports. The Chatham Islands, by contrast, are inside the 03 area and dialed like any South Island number.
Dial the US exit code 011, or type + on a mobile or in a browser dialer.
Dial New Zealand's country code, 64.
Drop the leading 0 from the New Zealand number: the mobile 021 123 4567 becomes 21 123 4567, and the Auckland landline 09 300 1234 becomes 9 300 1234.
Dial the rest exactly as written, for example 011 64 21 123 4567, which is +64 21 123 4567 in international format.
Check the day as well as the time before you call: New Zealand is 16 to 21 hours ahead of the continental US, so your afternoon is usually its next morning.
The leading 0 is a trunk prefix used only inside New Zealand, so drop it after +64 - Wikipedia. Landlines are always 8 digits after +64 (a one-digit area code plus seven digits), while mobiles are 8 to 10 digits after +64, so a shorter 021 number can be complete. A number written 0274 xxx xxx is really an 027 mobile: dial +64 27 4xx xxxx. 0800 and 0508 freephone numbers are generally meant for callers inside New Zealand, so use an organization's regular landline from abroad, and 0900 numbers are premium-rate services. The emergency number 111 only works on New Zealand networks.
The date line changes the calendar, not just the clock. New Zealand is 16 to 21 hours ahead of the continental US, so it is almost always tomorrow there. Its daylight saving runs from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April - New Zealand Government, the mirror image of the US schedule, so the gap shifts four times a year instead of staying fixed. The practical traps: a call on Friday afternoon US time reaches New Zealand on Saturday, when offices are shut, and a business's Monday morning is your Sunday afternoon or evening.
Mobile numbers do not all have the same length. New Zealand mobiles are 02 followed by seven to nine digits, and the first digits only show the network that originally issued the number: 021 numbers (One NZ, formerly Vodafone) can have six to eight digits after 021, while 022 (2degrees) and 027 (Spark) numbers have seven - Wikipedia. A short 021 number is not necessarily missing a digit. Watch for the old 0274 style too: numbers from Telecom's defunct 025 network moved to 027 with a 4 in front, and 0274 is not a real code, so 0274 123 456 is dialed +64 27 412 3456.
Freephone numbers stop at the border. New Zealand toll-free numbers start 0800 or 0508, and organizations often make them free only from phones inside the country. Immigration New Zealand, for example, lists its 0508 number as toll-free from New Zealand landlines only and gives callers in the rest of the world an Auckland number, +64 9 914 4100 - Immigration New Zealand. Before calling from the US, look for a regular 03, 04, 06, 07 or 09 number.
Old phones have lost their network. New Zealand's mobile operators shut down their 3G networks between the end of 2025 and 31 March 2026, and any device that relies on 3G no longer works, even for 111 emergency calls; some 4G phones that still used 3G for voice need a settings change - TCF. If an older relative's phone suddenly goes silent, the handset is the likely culprit, not your dialing, and texting 3G to 550 from that phone checks it for free.
New Zealand's landline map is one of the simplest anywhere. Between 1989 and 1993 the country cut about 80 area codes down to five and standardized local numbers at seven digits - Wikipedia. Since then every landline is a one-digit area code plus a seven-digit number: 09 for Auckland and Northland, 07 for Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, 06 for Taranaki, Manawatū-Whanganui, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne and the Wairarapa, 04 for Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast, and 03 for the entire South Island and the Chatham Islands.
The areas are so large that the 0 and the code are needed even between cities that share one: calling Dunedin from Christchurch means dialing 03 first. From abroad the rule is simpler still: drop the 0, keep the single digit, so 09 300 1234 becomes +64 9 300 1234.
Mobiles all sit under 02. The original networks still show in the prefixes, 021 for One NZ, 022 for 2degrees, 027 for Spark and 029 for the old TelstraClear network now part of One NZ, but mobile number portability arrived on 1 April 2007, so a prefix tells you who issued a number, not who carries it today - Wikipedia. One NZ is the company Americans may remember as Vodafone New Zealand; it officially took its new name on 3 April 2023 - Wikipedia.
The size of the gap depends on two sets of clock changes pulling in opposite directions. New Zealand runs on NZST (UTC+12) in its winter and NZDT (UTC+13) in its summer, with the Chatham Islands a further 45 minutes ahead - Wikipedia. Daylight saving begins at 2am on 27 September 2026 and ends at 3am on 4 April 2027 - New Zealand Government.
Combined with the US schedule that gives four regimes. From late September to the first Sunday in November, New Zealand is 17 hours ahead of Eastern and 20 ahead of Pacific; from November to mid-March, 18 and 21; from mid-March to early April, 17 and 20 again; and from April to late September, 16 and 19. The easiest rule is to call in your afternoon or evening and reach New Zealand's next morning or midday: at 5pm ET in December it is 11am the next day in Auckland.
Mind the weekend edges. Friday afternoon in the US is Saturday morning in New Zealand, so offices are closed, while Sunday afternoon or evening in the US is Monday morning there, the best moment to catch a business at the start of its week.
New Zealand has three national mobile networks, run by 2degrees, Spark and One NZ. The market remains highly concentrated, although 16 smaller virtual operators had grown to a combined 3.2% share by 2025 - Commerce Commission. Whichever network your relative uses, you dial the same +64 number.
The fixed network is shrinking. Traditional fixed-line voice services fell by 15% in a year, copper is being withdrawn in urban areas where fiber is available, and urban copper broadband connections were down to about 12,000 by June 2025 - Commerce Commission. Rural households remain the most likely to keep a landline, so a farm in Canterbury or Southland may still answer on an 03 number while a city flat is far less likely to have one.
Operators also work together against fraud. Through the New Zealand Telecommunications Forum they block and filter scam calls and texts where possible and share intelligence on new scam campaigns - TCF. Genuine international calls are not the target, but it is worth sending a quick message before you ring to say who is calling from the unfamiliar overseas number.
New Zealand's public holidays in 2026 include Waitangi Day on Friday 6 February, Good Friday on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April, Anzac Day on Saturday 25 April (observed on Monday 27 April), the King's Birthday on 1 June, Matariki on Friday 10 July and Labour Day on 26 October, with Christmas and Boxing Day falling in the southern summer - Employment New Zealand.
Each region also has its own anniversary day, so an office can be closed in one city and open in another. In 2026 Wellington's was observed on 19 January, Auckland's on 26 January, Otago's on 23 March and Canterbury's on 13 November, while the Chatham Islands marked theirs on 30 November - Employment New Zealand. Before calling a business, check whether its region is on holiday.
Because of the date line, a New Zealand holiday begins while the US is still on the previous day. Anzac Day dawn services on 25 April take place around midday or early afternoon on 24 April in US time, which is worth knowing if you want to reach family before or after they attend.
New Zealand's code is +64, and yes, drop the leading 0, which is only a trunk prefix for calls inside New Zealand. A mobile written 021 123 4567 becomes +64 21 123 4567, and an Auckland landline 09 300 1234 becomes +64 9 300 1234. From a US landline, dial 011 64 and then the number without its 0 - Wikipedia.
Landlines always have 8 digits after +64: a one-digit area code and a seven-digit local number. Mobiles vary: they are 02 followed by seven to nine digits, so 8 to 10 digits after +64, and 021 numbers in particular come in several lengths - Wikipedia. A short mobile number is therefore not necessarily missing a digit; check it with the person rather than padding it.
New Zealand is 16 to 18 hours ahead of US Eastern and 19 to 21 hours ahead of US Pacific, depending on the season, because its daylight saving (27 September 2026 to 4 April 2027) runs opposite to the US - New Zealand Government. In practice, your afternoon or evening is New Zealand's next morning: 5pm ET in December is 11am the next day in Auckland.
Often not. 0800 and 0508 are New Zealand's toll-free prefixes - Wikipedia, and organizations frequently make them free only from phones inside the country. Immigration New Zealand, for example, lists 0508 558 855 as toll-free from New Zealand landlines only and gives overseas callers +64 9 914 4100 instead - Immigration New Zealand. Look for a regular 03, 04, 06, 07 or 09 number.
It is a leftover from Telecom's old 025 network, which closed on 31 March 2007: its numbers moved to 027 with a 4 added in front, and they are often written 0274 xxx xxx even though 0274 is not a real code - Wikipedia. Dial it as an ordinary 027 mobile: 0274 123 456 becomes +64 27 412 3456.
It may depend on 3G. New Zealand's operators completed their 3G shutdown on 31 March 2026, and 3G-reliant phones no longer work, even for 111 calls; some 4G phones that still used 3G for voice just need a settings change - TCF. Your dialing is not the problem: once the SIM is in a compatible phone, the same +64 number rings again.
