The US corridor is small but close-knit. The Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey counts 76,678 people of Sri Lankan origin, with the largest groups in California (14,397), New York (8,321), Texas (7,412), Maryland (6,401) and New Jersey (5,242) - US Census Bureau, ACS 2024. The New York area holds the largest community, including the Tompkinsville neighborhood of Staten Island, known as Little Sri Lanka, and greater Los Angeles is second - Sri Lankan Americans, Wikipedia. What has changed is the channel. Regulator figures show international outgoing call minutes falling from about 694 million in 2011 to about 26 million in 2025, and incoming international minutes dropping from about 589 million in 2019 to about 124 million in 2025 - TRCSL. Much of that conversation has moved to internet apps, so a regular international call has become the tool for the moments when an app fails: a parent without data, a weak signal, or an office that only answers its landline.

Scam fatigue makes people wary of unknown callers. Sri Lanka Police say complaints about online financial fraud arrive daily, much of it run through Telegram, WhatsApp and social media, with victims tricked into revealing bank details, passwords and one-time passcodes - Newswire. In January 2026, Sri Lanka CERT warned of a surge in bank and police impersonation scams, including messages claiming that a credit card had been suspended - Sri Lanka Mirror. An unexpected call from a foreign number can look like more of the same, so tell the person when to expect you, and never ask anyone to read out a code or account number during a call.
Brand names in old contacts are out of date, but the numbers still work. Hutch bought Etisalat's Sri Lankan business in November 2018 - Hutch (Sri Lanka), Wikipedia, and Dialog Axiata acquired 100 percent of Airtel Lanka on 27 June 2024 - Airtel Sri Lanka, Wikipedia. A contact saved under 'Etisalat' or 'Airtel' still dials normally; today the regulator licenses just three mobile operators, Dialog Axiata, Mobitel and Hutchison - TRCSL.
Landlines are thinning out. Fixed voice subscriptions fell from about 2.85 million in 2021 to about 2.12 million in 2024, against roughly 29.4 million mobile subscriptions by mid-2026 in a country of about 21.8 million people - TRCSL. A home number that rang for decades may now be disconnected, so if a fixed line rings out or returns an error, ask for the person's 07 mobile.
The half-hour offset trips up schedules. Sri Lanka has used UTC+5:30 since 15 April 2006 - Time in Sri Lanka, Wikipedia, so it sits 9.5 or 10.5 hours ahead of New York depending on the season. Rounding the gap to a whole number of hours puts every call half an hour off target, so work out the exact local time before you dial, and recheck it after the US changes its clocks in March and November.
Sri Lanka moved to a 10-digit national format in phases during 2003, and on 18 October 2003 Colombo's code became 011, Kandy's 081 and Galle's 091 - ITU. Written locally, every number is a 0, a two-digit code and 7 more digits, which leaves 9 digits after +94 for landlines and mobiles alike.
A landline has three parts: the area code, a single digit that shows which fixed network the line belongs to, and a 6-digit local number. A 2 after the area code marks Sri Lanka Telecom's copper and fibre lines, while a 4 marks Dialog's fixed wireless service - Telephone numbers in Sri Lanka, Wikipedia. The scheme dates to November 2003, when the wireless operators Suntel and Lanka Bell had their numbers folded into the area codes with first digits 4 and 5 - ITU. So 011 2xx xxxx and 011 4xx xxxx are both Colombo landlines, just on different networks.
Mobiles start with 07, and the third digit names the operator: 070 and 071 for SLT-Mobitel, 072 and 078 for Hutch, and 074, 075, 076 and 077 for Dialog - Wikipedia. Any number that starts 07 and has 10 digits locally is a mobile, wherever on the island its owner happens to be.
Sri Lanka's mobile market has consolidated into three licensed operators: Dialog Axiata, Mobitel and Hutchison - TRCSL. Dialog is by far the largest, with around 19.6 million mobile subscribers, nearly 67 percent of the market, and India's Bharti Airtel now owns 10.355 percent of Dialog - Dialog Axiata, Wikipedia. Hutch, the third operator, had about 4 million subscribers at the end of 2025 - Hutch (Sri Lanka), Wikipedia.
Unusually for 2026, you can still read the network from the prefix, because mobile number portability has not launched. In August 2026 the government said operators had until the end of September to agree on terms, after which the TRCSL could issue a directive, and that the launch date would be announced later - Newswire. A portability company, Lanka Number Portability Services, has held a TRCSL licence since July 2024 - TRCSL, so expect this to change.
For a caller in the US, none of this alters how you dial. It does help when a relative says to call their Dialog number: any 074, 076 or 077 number is Dialog, and so is 075, still sold under the Airtel name. An old 072 number saved as Etisalat is now a Hutch line.
Sri Lanka works a Monday to Friday week - Workweek and weekend, Wikipedia, but its calendar has a feature few countries share: every full-moon day is a Poya day, a public and bank holiday on which shops and businesses generally close, and there are 13 or 14 of them a year - Poya, Wikipedia. Sri Lanka gives official status to Sinhala and Tamil, with English as a recognised language - Languages of Sri Lanka, Wikipedia. Around 92 percent of the population can speak Sinhala, and Tamil speakers number about 3.8 million, including Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamils and most Sri Lankan Moors - Wikipedia.
