Toll-free numbers only work reliably from inside the US and Canada. From anywhere else the call fails, or is billed as an international call, even over your carrier's Wi-Fi Calling. Skype used to connect them for free until it shut down on May 5, 2025. From this browser they connect from any country, for $0.02 a minute.
Works with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888 numbers, and with any regular US number.
The business pays for every call to its toll-free number, so the number only takes calls from the places the business pays for, which is the US and usually Canada. These numbers are not reachable from outside the North American numbering plan (toll-free numbers in the NANP).
Your US phone does not help much either. AT&T's own support page says that in many cases calls to toll-free numbers won't complete when you travel outside the US, and that when they do they are billed as international calls (AT&T). Some networks abroad block them outright: Wells Fargo notes that Mexico's Telcel blocks international toll-free calls (Wells Fargo).
A call placed from a browser through a US service is different: it reaches the phone network inside the US, so to the toll-free line it is an ordinary American call.
The call starts inside the US, so the toll-free line accepts it, from any country with a decent internet connection. Nothing to install, it works on hotel or cafe Wi-Fi, and it costs $0.02 a minute. The business sees a US number, not yours.
Banks and card issuers print a separate number for calling from outside the US on the back of the card and on their contact page, often one you can call collect. A few are in the table below. It is a regular US number, so a browser call reaches it too.
AT&T and Verizon let you call regular US numbers for free over Wi-Fi while you travel. Toll-free numbers are the exception: AT&T says they often will not complete from abroad, and are billed as international calls when they do. Turn Wi-Fi Calling on before you leave: Verizon notes it cannot be switched on from abroad on an iPhone.
For anything that is not urgent, the company's app or online chat often reaches the same team without a phone call at all. For a frozen card or a missed flight, a call is still the fastest.
Big US organizations publish a regular number for callers outside the US. These are taken from each organization's own page, linked in the last column, on October 25, 2026. For any other bank or card, the number is on the back of the card.

Calling collect is free for you where the local operator offers collect calls. Dialed directly from this browser, each of these numbers costs the US rate ($0.02 a minute), like any US number.
Toll-free and regular US numbers cost the same $0.02 a minute, from whichever country you are in. There is no connection fee and no subscription, and you see the price before it rings.
Your first call is on us: every new account starts with $1.00 in free credit, about 51 minutes to a US number, no card needed. Prices updated October 31, 2026.
Use the number printed on your card or on the company's own website, never one from an ad or a search snippet: fake support numbers are a common scam.
Have your account or card number, and your passport if it is a travel issue, in front of you before you dial.
Expect a different check: the call does not come from the phone number on your account, so the agent may verify you another way, for example with a code sent by text or email.
Call in US business hours. Many lines are staffed around the clock for lost cards, but not for everything else, and Eastern time is 5 to 7 hours behind most of Europe.
Use a headset or earbuds on a laptop, and a steady Wi-Fi connection, for a long wait on hold.
Some countries restrict internet calling to approved apps. In the United Arab Emirates, calls through services the regulator has not approved can be blocked, and its rules hold the user liable (Khaleej Times), so use the organization's number for callers abroad from a local phone there. And this service is not for emergency calls: for those, dial the local emergency number of the country you are in from a local phone.
Usually not by dialing it directly. US toll-free numbers are paid for by the business and normally accept only calls from the US and Canada, so from most other countries the call fails, and when it does connect your carrier bills it as an international call. A call that starts inside the US, such as a browser call through a US service, connects normally.
Not from your foreign or roaming phone: the business pays only for calls that start in North America. Calling collect to the organization's number for callers abroad is free for you where the local operator offers it. From this browser a call to a toll-free number is billed at the US rate, $0.02 a minute.
No. Skype connected calls to US toll-free numbers for free, but Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025. Skype accounts moved to Microsoft Teams, which does not call phone numbers on a free account.
No. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls only reach other WhatsApp or FaceTime users. A toll-free number is an ordinary phone line, so it needs a service that calls phone numbers.
Telcel, Mexico's largest mobile network, blocks international toll-free calls, according to Wells Fargo's own dialing instructions. A browser call over mobile data or Wi-Fi does not go through Telcel's phone network, so the number connects.
Yes. Canada uses the same toll-free codes as the US (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888), and a call that starts in North America reaches them the same way.
