Colombia has no trunk-0 prefix to strip. Many countries make you drop a leading 0 when calling from abroad; Colombia does not, because since the 2021 reform the national number is a flat 10 digits with no separate trunk code - Telephone numbers in Colombia. Colombian companies love the national 01 800 toll-free format for customer service, written as 01-800-xxx-xxxx - Telephone numbers in Colombia. Here is the catch that surprises everyone calling from abroad: 01 800 numbers usually only work from inside Colombia. The 01 is a domestic long-distance access prefix, not part of an internationally diallable number, so you cannot reach a Colombian toll-free line by putting +57 in front of it. When you need a bank, an airline, or a utility from overseas, look for their direct 10-digit line (a 601 or 604 landline, or a mobile) rather than the 01 800 number printed for local customers.
Banks and big service providers increasingly route customers to a Bogota 601 landline or a WhatsApp-enabled mobile, which is good news for international callers because both are reachable with a normal +57 dial. Government emergency and service lines, by contrast, are short national codes that are not reachable from abroad at all: the all-in-one emergency number is 123, and it only works from a phone physically in Colombia - Telephone numbers in Colombia. One more business-line reality: many Colombian small businesses and independent professionals operate entirely on a mobile number and treat WhatsApp as their front desk. So do not be surprised when the number for a Cartagena tour operator or a Medellin clinic is a cell rather than a or landline.
Colombia's mobile market is dominated by four networks: Claro (America Movil, by far the largest), Movistar (Telefonica), Tigo (Millicom), and the newcomer WOM, which entered in 2021 by acquiring Avantel and grabbed close to 8 percent of the market with aggressive pricing by 2024 - Finance Colombia. There is also ETB, historically Bogota's fixed-line operator.
Because of number portability (in force since 2011), the historical rule that certain 3xx ranges belonged to certain carriers is now unreliable - Finance Colombia. A number that opens 300 may have started life on Claro and long since moved to WOM.
