India's 1800 toll-free numbers, its 1860 numbers and short helplines like IRCTC's 14646 work only for callers inside India, so from the US the call never goes through. Banks, the income tax helpdesk, LIC and IRCTC publish numbers for callers abroad, and eight of the nine banks list a US toll-free line for NRIs. Those numbers are below, each checked on the organization's own website. From this browser, any number in India rings for $0.07 a minute.
Paste it the way it was written, with or without +91. We tell you whether it takes calls from the US.
An Indian 1800 number is toll-free because the organization pays for the call, and it pays only for calls that start on an Indian network. From the US the call does not go through, whether you dial 011 91 1800 and the number from a US phone, use Google Voice or another calling app, or use this browser. That is why banks give their customers abroad a different number: Kotak Mahindra Bank, for one, lists a Mumbai number "to call us from outside India" and toll-free numbers in the US and other countries for NRIs (kotak.bank.in).
1860 numbers are shared-cost lines: a caller inside India pays a local call charge and the organization the rest, and they usually do not take calls from abroad either. Short helplines work only inside India too: IRCTC's own contact page says to dial 14646 "within India" and gives other numbers for customers outside India (irctc.co.in).
What works is the line the organization publishes for callers outside India: usually a regular landline in Mumbai (022), Bengaluru (080), Delhi (011) or Gurugram (0124), and at some banks a US toll-free number for NRIs. Look for NRI, overseas or calling from abroad on the contact page; banks also print it on the back of the card. From the US you dial 011 91 and the number without its leading 0, so 022 2345 6789 in Mumbai is 011 91 22 2345 6789. Delhi's area code is itself 011, so a Delhi number keeps it: 011 2345 6789 there is 011 91 11 2345 6789. The guide to calling India from the US covers mobiles and the rest of the format.
Each number was read on an official page, the organization's own or its government's, linked in the last column, on October 31, 2026. Where an organization lists no line for callers abroad, its regular number in India is given: it takes calls from the US. For a bank card, the number on the back of your card is the one to trust.

From this browser a number in India costs $0.07 a minute, and a US number $0.02 a minute. A US toll-free number in the table is free from a US phone.
$0.07 a minute to landlines and mobiles alike, with no connection fee and no subscription. You only pay for a call that is answered, so a long wait on hold is the main cost to plan for.
Your first call is on us: every new account starts with $1.00 in free credit, about 14 minutes to India, no card needed. Prices updated October 31, 2026.
India keeps India Standard Time all year, five and a half hours ahead of UTC, with no daylight saving. So from November to March India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York and 13 hours 30 minutes ahead of Los Angeles: 10 a.m. in India is 11:30 p.m. the night before in New York and 8:30 p.m. in Los Angeles. From March to November the gap is an hour smaller, 9 hours 30 minutes from New York and 12 hours 30 minutes from Los Angeles. Office lines in India answer in the US night, so the West Coast evening is the easiest window; many bank lines in the table are open around the clock.
Take the number from the organization's own website or the back of your card, never from a search snippet, an ad or a social media comment: fake customer care numbers for Indian banks and wallets are a common fraud, and a real bank never asks for your OTP, PIN or card CVV on a call.
Have what they will ask for in front of you: your customer ID or account number, the mobile number registered with the bank, your PAN for the tax helpline, your booking reference (PNR) for an airline.
If your bank uses a phone banking PIN (often called a TPIN), have it ready, and expect a one-time code sent to your registered mobile or email to confirm who you are, since your call reaches them from a US number.
Expect the menu to offer English and Hindi first, often with regional languages after them.
Use earbuds or a headset and a steady Wi-Fi connection if you call from a laptop: waits on hold can be long.
This service is not for emergency calls. For an emergency in India, the person there should dial the local emergency number from a local phone.
No. An Indian 1800 number is free for the caller because the organization pays for the call, and it accepts only calls that start on an Indian network, so from the US it does not connect, from a US phone, Google Voice or any calling app alike. Call the number the organization publishes for callers outside India instead: most banks list one for NRIs.
An 1860 number is a shared-cost line: inside India the caller pays a local call charge and the organization pays the rest. Like an 1800 number it usually cannot be reached from abroad, so use the organization's number for overseas callers.
From a US phone dial 011 91, then the 10-digit number without its leading 0: a Mumbai landline written 022 2345 6789 is 011 91 22 2345 6789, and a mobile written 98765 43210 is 011 91 98765 43210. Delhi's area code is itself 011, so a Delhi number written 011 2345 6789 is dialed 011 91 11 2345 6789. From a mobile you can also dial +91 and the 10 digits.
Not the 1800 line. The refusal is on India's side, so Google Voice and other calling apps reach the same dead end, and WhatsApp calls only reach other WhatsApp users. The number the organization gives for callers abroad can be reached by any service that calls phone numbers.
It is free from a US phone where the bank runs a US toll-free number for NRIs, as some in the table do. Otherwise it is an ordinary international call to India, billed by whatever you call with. From this browser you only pay for a call that is answered, and the price shows before it rings.
$0.07 a minute to any regular number in India, landline or mobile, with no connection fee and no subscription. You only pay for a call that is answered, and the price shows before it rings. Every new account starts with $1.00 in free credit, about 14 minutes to India.
Need the other direction? Calling a US 1-800 number from abroad covers US toll-free lines from India and everywhere else, and how to call India from the US covers every other number there.
Type the number, see the price, and talk. Nothing to install, and a new account's first 14 minutes are on us.
