How to call Malaysia from the US

From a Penang-born engineer in Houston ringing her parents on a 04 landline to a student in New York checking on family in Kota Kinabalu, calling Malaysia means dialing numbers that are not all the same length, to people who have learned to let unknown callers ring out.

What to dial

To reach a Malaysia number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.

Exit code (United States)
011
+
Malaysia code
60
+
The number
12 345 6789
The complete number

011 60 12 345 6789

From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +60 12 345 6789 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.

Drop the leading 0

Numbers in Malaysia are written locally with a 0 in front, like 012-345 6789. Calling from abroad you leave that 0 out, so it becomes +60 12 345 6789.

Mobile numbers in Malaysia are not all the same length (this example has 9 digits after +60), so a different count is not a mistake in itself. If a call does not connect, check the start of the number against the rule above.

Calling Malaysia from somewhere other than the United States?

Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 60 and the number stay exactly the same.

Mobile vs landline
Mobiles start with 01. Most are 10 digits written locally (012-345 6789), which is 9 digits after +60, but 011 numbers carry an extra digit (011-2345 6789 is 10 digits after +60), and 015 is used for VoIP lines. Landlines start 03 to 09: Klang Valley 03 numbers have 8 local digits, the rest of the peninsula 7, and Sabah and Sarawak 6 behind a two-digit 08x code.
Time zone
One zone for the whole country: Malaysia Time, UTC+8, all year. There is no daylight saving time. Peninsular Malaysia moved its clocks 30 minutes forward on 1 January 1982 to match Sabah and Sarawak.
Best time to reach someone
Malaysia is 12 hours ahead of US Eastern and 15 ahead of Pacific while US daylight saving time is on (second Sunday of March to first Sunday of November), and 13 and 16 hours ahead the rest of the year. To reach someone at home at 8 to 10pm in Kuala Lumpur, call 8 to 10am ET in summer or 7 to 9am ET in winter. From California, 5 to 9pm PT in summer (4 to 8pm in winter) reaches 8am to noon the next morning. Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu take Friday and Saturday off; the rest of Malaysia rests on Saturday and Sunday.

Who calls Malaysia, and where Malaysia calls

Calling in to Malaysia

Malaysians in the US are few in number but closely tied to home. About 50,000 people in the United States identified as Malaysian in 2023, the 20th-largest Asian-origin group, and 79% of those who identify as Malaysian alone are immigrants, so many still have parents, siblings or classmates on a Malaysian SIM, and the largest cluster is the New York metro area, followed by Los Angeles and Houston - Pew Research Center.

Business is the other half of the traffic. Malaysia is the United States' 19th-largest trading partner, with $65.55 billion in two-way goods trade in 2023 and $21.53 billion of US direct investment - US State Department. Much of it runs through Penang, where Intel opened its first overseas production site in 1972, and Malaysia now handles about 13% of the world's chip packaging, assembly and testing - CNBC. A supply-chain manager in Oregon or Arizona calling a plant in Penang or Kulim is an everyday Malaysia call.

Outside the US, the heaviest inbound flow comes from Singapore, home to roughly 1.6 million Malaysians, the largest Malaysian community abroad, plus hundreds of thousands who cross the Johor causeway every day for work or school - Malaysians in Singapore.

Calling out from Malaysia

Malaysia uses a single international prefix, 00, on landlines and mobiles alike, so a call to the US is 00 1 followed by the 10-digit number, and + works on any mobile - MCMC Numbering Plan. CelcomDigi's help pages show the pattern with a Jakarta number: 00 62 21 and the number, or +62 21 and the number - CelcomDigi. Maxis customers can put the discount prefix 132 in front (132 00 61 for Australia), an option that works only inside Malaysia and not while roaming - Maxis.

The busiest lanes are regional. Calls to Singapore need the full 00 65, because the old 02 shortcut that let Malaysians dial Singapore like a domestic trunk call was withdrawn in 2017, while in East Malaysia the code 080 still dials Brunei directly - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. Malaysia also hosts nearly 2.5 million documented migrant workers, 38% of them from Bangladesh, 24% from Indonesia and 16% from Nepal, most of them with family to call back home - IOM.

Dialing Malaysia, step by step

  1. 1

Dial the exit code: 011 from a US or Canadian phone, 00 from most other countries, or simply + on a mobile or browser dialer.

  2. 2

    Dial Malaysia's country code, 60.

  3. 3

    Drop the leading 0 from the Malaysian number: the mobile 012-345 6789 becomes 12 345 6789, and the Kuala Lumpur landline 03-2345 6789 becomes 3 2345 6789.

  4. 4

Dial every remaining digit. An 011 mobile keeps its extra digit, so 011-2345 6789 is dialed as +60 11 2345 6789.

Always drop the trunk 0: it is only used for calls inside Malaysia, so 03-2345 6789 becomes +60 3 2345 6789. A valid number has 8, 9 or 10 digits once the +60 is in front: 8 for landlines outside the Klang Valley (including Sabah and Sarawak), 9 for Klang Valley landlines and most mobiles, and 10 for 011 mobiles and 015 VoIP numbers - MCMC Numbering Plan. Never type a 0 after +60, and do not try 1-300 or 1-800 numbers from abroad; use the organization's +603 or other geographic number instead.

What trips people up when calling Malaysia

The biggest obstacle is trust, not dialing. Between 2022 and 30 November 2025, Malaysian authorities and operators blocked about 2.3 billion suspected scam calls and 2.5 billion unsolicited text messages, and the government notes that spoofed calls typically originate outside Malaysia and enter through international gateways - The Sun. The best-known version is the Macau scam, in which a caller poses as a bank or a public official and pushes the victim to reveal banking details or transfer money - Bank Negara Malaysia. Police now tell the public to simply ignore unidentified callers - Malay Mail, and an unfamiliar number from the US fits that profile exactly.

Expect silence when someone does pick up. MCMC has warned that scammers place silent calls to confirm a number is live and to record the victim's voice for cloning, and some Malaysians now answer unknown numbers without speaking, hanging up if nobody talks - The Star. When a call connects to dead air, say your name and why you are calling straight away. Better still, send a WhatsApp message first: 90.7% of Malaysian internet users aged 16 to 64 use WhatsApp every month - Meltwater.

Mobile numbers are not all the same length, so correcting one can break it. Most Malaysian mobiles are 10 digits written locally, but numbers in the 011 range use 8-digit subscriber numbers, so an 011 number is 11 digits with the 0, or 10 digits after +60 - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. If a saved 011 contact looks one digit too long, it is almost certainly right, and trimming it to look like a 012 number will reach the wrong line or no line at all.

Hotline numbers are built for callers inside Malaysia. A 1-300 number charges the caller a local rate and a 1-800 number is free to the caller, both run as national services - MCMC Numbering Plan. Malaysian 1-800 numbers do not accept international calls, so from abroad you need the business's standard landline or mobile number instead - StarHub.

Reading a Malaysian number: state codes, 011 and the East Malaysia split

Malaysian landline codes follow the states. The regulator designates 03 for Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor, 04 for Perlis, Kedah and Penang, 05 for Perak, 06 for Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, 07 for Johor and 09 for Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, while Sabah and Sarawak use two-digit 08x codes and Labuan has 087; border areas do not always follow the state line, so Muar and Tangkak in Johor use 06 and Genting Highlands in Pahang uses 03 - MCMC Numbering Plan.

Length follows the same map. A Klang Valley landline has an 8-digit local number (03-2345 6789, dialed as +60 3 2345 6789), the rest of the peninsula uses 7 digits (04-234 5678) and East Malaysia uses 6 digits behind its two-digit code (082-234 567), and because Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya only moved from 7 to 8 digits in phases between 1999 and 2001, a very old Klang Valley business card may be a digit short - Telephone numbers in Malaysia.

Mobiles live under 01. Prefixes were first handed out by operator (012 and 017 for Maxis, 013 and 019 for Celcom, 016 for Digi), but since mobile number portability arrived on 1 October 2008, the prefix only tells you who originally issued the number, not who carries it today - Telephone numbers in Malaysia.

Carriers, prepaid SIMs and why landline numbers stay put

Three groups carry most Malaysian mobiles. CelcomDigi was formed when Celcom and Digi merged on 1 December 2022, and smaller brands such as Unifi Mobile, Tune Talk, XOX, redONE and Yes hold their own blocks in the 010, 011 and 018 ranges - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. By subscribers, CelcomDigi had about 20.2 million in mid-2024, ahead of Maxis at about 12.7 million and U Mobile at more than 9 million, the operator chosen in late 2024 to build Malaysia's second 5G network - SoyaCincau.

Most lines are prepaid. MCMC counted about 33.9 million prepaid mobile subscriptions against 16.0 million postpaid in the first quarter of 2025 - MCMC. With that many prepaid SIMs in circulation, a number you saved years ago may simply have lapsed: if it rings out or plays an operator message, ask for the current number by WhatsApp or email before assuming a network fault.

Landlines are the stable part of the picture. Telekom Malaysia still holds a near-monopoly on fixed lines outside Putrajaya and parts of the Klang Valley, and landline numbers cannot be ported between providers - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. An 03 or 04 number for a clinic, school or family business tends to stay the same for years.

Weekends and clocks that depend on where you are calling

Malaysia does not share one weekend. Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu rest on Friday and Saturday, so Sunday is a normal working day there, while the other states and federal territories take Saturday and Sunday off - Public holidays in Malaysia. Johor switched back to a Saturday-Sunday weekend on 1 January 2025 after keeping Friday and Saturday since 2014 - The Star. If you need a government office, bank branch or school in Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu or Alor Setar, Sunday morning Malaysian time works and Friday does not.

The clock itself is simple. All of Malaysia runs on UTC+8 with no daylight saving time, a single zone created when the peninsula moved its clocks 30 minutes forward on 1 January 1982 to match East Malaysia - Time in Malaysia. Because the US changes its clocks and Malaysia does not, the gap to US Eastern is 12 hours in the American summer and 13 hours in winter. A call at 8am in New York in July reaches Kuala Lumpur at 8pm the same day; the same call in January lands at 9pm.

Mind the date line as well. For most of the American evening Malaysia is already on the next day, so a call placed at 6pm PT on a Friday in summer lands at 9am on Saturday, a weekend day in every Malaysian state, and a Thursday evening call from the US reaches Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu on their Friday day off. That is a good slot for family and a wasted one for an office.

Reaching Malaysian companies, banks and agencies from abroad

Large Malaysian organizations expect overseas callers, but they route them to a different number from the one printed on local ads. The domestic line is usually a 1-300 or 1-800 number, and the overseas line is an ordinary geographic number, often a Kuala Lumpur +603 line: Malaysia Airlines lists 1 300 88 3000 within Malaysia and +603 7843 3000 outside it - Malaysia Airlines. On a bank card or website, look for the number labeled overseas, international or from outside Malaysia.

Short codes stay domestic. 999 is the Malaysian emergency number and 112 also works, and 997 belongs to the National Scam Response Centre - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. The 997 line runs 24 hours a day and handles cases such as Macau scams and bank or government impersonation - MyGOV. These short numbers only work from a phone inside Malaysia, so if a relative needs help, call them and let them dial.

When you do call an office, English is widely used in business, and a direct 03 or 04 extension usually beats a general hotline. Keep the full international format in your contacts (+60 and the number without its 0) so the same entry works whether you dial from the US, from Singapore or from a Malaysian SIM.

Questions about calling Malaysia

What is the country code for Malaysia, and do I drop the 0?

Malaysia's country code is +60, and yes, drop the leading 0 that Malaysians write in front of every number. The mobile 012-345 6789 becomes +60 12 345 6789, and the Kuala Lumpur landline 03-2345 6789 becomes +60 3 2345 6789. From a US landline, dial 011 60 and then the rest of the number, and from a mobile just start with +60.

Why does my contact's 011 number have an extra digit?

Because the 011 range, opened in 2010 as older prefixes filled up, uses 8-digit subscriber numbers instead of the 7 digits behind 012, 013 and the other older prefixes - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. An 011 number is 11 digits written locally and 10 digits after +60, for example +60 11 2345 6789. Keep every digit; only the leading 0 goes.

Can I tell which network a Malaysian mobile is on from its prefix?

Not reliably. Prefixes were issued per operator (012 and 017 to Maxis, 013 and 019 to Celcom, 016 to Digi), but mobile number portability since 1 October 2008 lets people keep their number when they switch, and Celcom and Digi have since merged into CelcomDigi - Telephone numbers in Malaysia. The network makes no difference to how you dial.

What is the time difference between Malaysia and the US?

Malaysia is on UTC+8 all year with no daylight saving time - time.is. That puts Kuala Lumpur 12 hours ahead of New York and 15 ahead of Los Angeles while US daylight saving time is on, and 13 and 16 hours ahead from early November to mid-March. Evening in Malaysia is breakfast time on the US East Coast, and for most of the American evening it is already the next day there.

Can I call a Malaysian 1-300 or 1-800 number from the US?

Usually not. These numbers are designed for callers inside Malaysia, and Malaysian 1-800 numbers do not accept international calls - StarHub. Look for the organization's overseas number instead, typically a +603 line: Malaysia Airlines, for example, lists +603 7843 3000 for callers outside Malaysia.

Why won't my relative in Malaysia pick up when I call from the US?

Probably because the number is unfamiliar. Malaysian police advise people to ignore unidentified callers - Malay Mail, and billions of scam calls have been blocked since 2022. Send a WhatsApp message first saying you will call, and speak as soon as the call connects, since some Malaysians now answer unknown numbers in silence and wait for the caller to speak first.
