From Waltham, Massachusetts, the Boston suburb nicknamed Little Kampala, to families across Texas, Georgia and California, Ugandans abroad call home to parents on MTN and Airtel mobiles, and a plain phone call reaches the many relatives who still use a basic handset rather than WhatsApp.

To reach a Uganda number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.
011 256 712 345678
From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +256 712 345678 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.
Numbers in Uganda are written locally with a 0 in front, like 0712 345678. Calling from abroad you leave that 0 out, so it becomes +256 712 345678.
A Uganda mobile number is 9 digits after +256. If a call does not connect, count the digits first.
Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 256 and the number stay exactly the same.
A ~ means wait for the second dial tone before dialing the rest. It is not a digit you press.

The 2024 American Community Survey counts about 43,600 Uganda-born residents in the United States - US Census Bureau. The five-year estimates put the largest state community in Massachusetts, followed by California, Texas, Georgia and Maryland, and the biggest county concentrations in Middlesex County, Massachusetts (about 4,000 people) and DeKalb County, Georgia, east of Atlanta - US Census Bureau. Middlesex County is home to Waltham, nicknamed "Little Kampala" and headquarters of the Ugandan North American Association - Ugandan Americans, Wikipedia; Ugandans have been settling there since the 1970s - Global Boston. A student in Waltham phoning a grandmother in Masaka, or a family in suburban Atlanta checking on a sibling in Gulu, is the typical US call into Uganda.
Britain is the other long-standing corridor: after Idi Amin expelled Uganda's Asians in 1972, about 27,000 resettled in the UK, and the 2011 census counted about 61,000 Uganda-born residents across Britain, most of them in and around London, with a large Ugandan Asian community in Leicester - Ugandan migration to the United Kingdom, Wikipedia. The largest numbers of Ugandans abroad, though, live next door, in Kenya, South Sudan and Rwanda - UN DESA. Together these flows sent about US$1.43 billion in personal remittances to Uganda in 2024 - World Bank.
To call abroad from Uganda, people dial the international prefix 000, then the country code - ITU. A relative in Kampala calling a US number dials 000 1 and the 10 digits, although on a mobile most people just store numbers with a +. Uganda also keeps two regional shortcuts from the era when Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda shared a numbering plan: the ITU list notes that between the three countries the national number is prefixed with 005 for Kenya and 007 for Tanzania, while callers in Kenya and Tanzania use 006 to reach Uganda.
The busiest outbound routes follow the people. Kenya hosts about 275,000 Uganda-born residents, South Sudan about 156,000 and Rwanda about 92,000, far more than any Western country - UN DESA, so calls to +254, +211 and +250 are part of everyday family life, alongside the traffic to the UK, the US and Canada. None of these shortcuts matter to you as a caller in the US: you always dial 011 256 or +256, then the 9-digit number without its 0.
Dial the US exit code 011, or press + if you are on a mobile or using a browser dialer.
Enter Uganda's country code, 256.
Drop the leading 0 from the local number: 0712 345678 becomes 712 345678, and a Kampala landline written 0414 xxx xxx becomes 414 xxx xxx.
Dial the remaining 9 digits, for a complete number of +256 712 345678 (011 256 712 345678 from a US landline).
Always drop the trunk 0. Ugandan numbers are written with a leading 0 for domestic calls, but from abroad you dial +256 followed by the 9 remaining digits. A saved number with 10 digits after the country code still contains its 0. The regional prefixes 005, 006 and 007 apply only between Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda - ITU, so never use them from the US. An old 079 number from before 2021 was an Africell line and no longer reaches the same person, while a new 0790 number is MTN. Toll-free 0800 numbers are intended for callers inside Uganda, so look for an organization's regular 0414 or mobile number instead.
An old 079 number probably no longer reaches the person you saved it for. The 079 range began with Orange Uganda, passed to Africell when it bought Orange in 2014, and went quiet when Africell left the market in 2021 - Techjaja. When Africell shut down after 7 October 2021, about 3.3 million subscribers had to move to the remaining networks - List of mobile network operators in Uganda, Wikipedia, and because Uganda has not implemented mobile number portability, moving meant taking a new number. In March 2025 the regulator gave the range to MTN, which now issues numbers from 0790 000000 to 0790 999999 - The Observer. A 079 contact saved before 2021 is either dead or, inside the new 0790 block, may now belong to a stranger.
SIM registration drives have cut off lines before. In November 2015 MTN Uganda switched off 3.7 million of its 11.5 million customers to comply with the regulator's new SIM registration rules - MTN Uganda, Wikipedia. Registration remains tightly controlled: during the January 2026 election the regulator even halted the sale and registration of new SIM cards - Daily Monitor. If a relative's number rings dead after a long gap, ask whether it was re-registered or replaced.
Elections can take the internet down, but not the phone network. The regulator ordered operators to suspend public internet access from 6pm on 13 January 2026, ahead of the 15 January general election - Daily Monitor, while voice calls and basic SMS were expected to keep working - TechMoran. Access only began returning late on 17 January, and social media and messaging platforms were still restricted two days later - CIPESA. When WhatsApp goes silent around a vote, a regular call to the +256 mobile number is the way through.
Every Ugandan number is 9 digits after +256, and the plan is closed, so the full number is dialed even for local calls - Telephone numbers in Uganda, Wikipedia. Written at home it gains a trunk 0, giving familiar 10-digit forms such as 0772 123 456 for a mobile or 0414 123 456 for a Kampala landline.
Because Uganda has not implemented mobile number portability, even though a 2018 broadband policy called for it - The Independent, the first digits reliably tell you the operator. MTN uses 077 and 078 for personal lines and 031 and 039 for business lines - Dignited. Airtel uses 075 and 070, the latter inherited when it took over Warid Telecom, and Uganda Telecom (UTL) uses 071.
The newest prefixes show how fast MTN has grown. In 2021 the regulator gave it a 0760 block after it had used 75 percent of its 077 and 078 numbers - Techjaja, and in March 2025 it added 0790 000000 to 0790 999999, while existing numbers were unaffected. So a number starting 0760 or 0790 is a recent MTN line, not a typo.
Uganda had 49 million active mobile subscriptions at the end of June 2026, but only 20.5 million smartphones on its networks and about 11 million WhatsApp subscriptions - PC Tech Magazine. A quarter earlier the regulator counted 24.7 million feature phones against 20.3 million smartphones - Dignited. In other words, a large share of the people you might want to reach use handsets built mainly for calls and SMS.
Policy has pushed in the same direction. In July 2018 Uganda introduced a daily tax on "over the top" messaging and voice services, including social networks, and internet use fell significantly after it arrived - Communications in Uganda, Wikipedia. Add election-period shutdowns and the pattern is clear: app calls work well between smartphone users, while an ordinary call to a +256 number reaches everyone with a working SIM.
For a family call, the practical approach is to save both: the person's WhatsApp contact for everyday chats, and their plain mobile number for the calls that must connect, such as news about a funeral, a hospital stay or school fees.
Two operators carry almost all of Uganda's traffic. MTN Uganda ended 2025 with 24.2 million subscribers and 14.7 million active mobile money users - PC Tech Magazine, while Airtel Uganda reached 19.2 million subscribers, and its data revenue now exceeds its voice revenue - Broadcast Media Africa. With Africell gone since 2021, the relatives you call are very likely on one of these two networks.
Mobile money makes a Ugandan number more than a way to talk. Ugandans made 2.37 billion mobile money transactions in the first quarter of 2026 alone, through MTN MoMo and Airtel Money - Dignited. Because the wallet is tied to the SIM, a changed number also means a changed wallet, which is one more reason to confirm a relative's current number before you send money.
That also explains why a mobile money outage matters to callers. During the January 2026 internet shutdown, mobile money services were disrupted and cash withdrawals were blocked for a time - CIPESA. If a transfer sent during a shutdown seems to be missing, a phone call is the quickest way to check with the recipient.
Fixed lines are a small part of Uganda's network: the country had about 368,000 main telephone lines in 2018 - Communications in Uganda, Wikipedia, against tens of millions of mobiles. A Kampala landline typically looks like the regulator's own head office number in Bugolobi, +256 414 339 000; the Uganda Communications Commission also lists 0312 339 000 and a toll-free line, 0800 222 777 - UCC. From the US you dial the first as +256 414 339 000, while the 0800 toll-free number is designed for callers inside Uganda and may not connect from abroad.
Short codes are three or four digits and only work on Ugandan networks. The regulator reserves 110 to 119 for emergency and safety services and 900 to 999 for emergency services such as 999, with 120 to 129 for customer care and 200 to 298 for USSD services - UCC. None of them can be dialed from abroad, so in an emergency call the person's own mobile and ask someone nearby to dial the local code.
Language is rarely a barrier on a Ugandan call: English and Swahili are the official languages - Uganda, Wikipedia, so English is a safe choice when you ring a bank, hospital or school switchboard.
Uganda's country code is +256, and yes, you drop the leading 0. A mobile written 0772 123 456 is dialed +256 772 123 456, or 011 256 772 123 456 from a US landline - Telephone numbers in Uganda, Wikipedia. What remains is always 9 digits, whether the number is an MTN or Airtel mobile or a Kampala landline.
Today it is MTN. The 079 range belonged to Orange Uganda and then Africell, which left Uganda in 2021. In March 2025 the regulator granted MTN the 0790 000000 to 0790 999999 block - The Observer. So a new 0790 number is an MTN line, while a 079 contact saved before 2021 was an Africell number that no longer reaches the same person.
Uganda uses East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year, with no daylight saving - Time in Uganda, Wikipedia. It is 7 hours ahead of US Eastern and 10 ahead of Pacific while US daylight saving time is in effect (8 March to 1 November in 2026), and 8 and 11 hours ahead the rest of the year. Noon in New York is 7pm or 8pm in Kampala.
Generally yes. When the regulator ordered a nationwide internet suspension ahead of the January 2026 election, voice calls and basic SMS were expected to remain operational - TechMoran, even though WhatsApp and other apps went dark. A regular call to the person's +256 mobile number is the most reliable way to reach family during a shutdown or when they have no data.
Every Ugandan number is 9 digits after +256, or 10 digits when written locally with the leading 0. Mobiles start with 7 after the country code, and fixed lines with 2, 3 or 4. If you count ten digits after the country code, the 0 is still in; if you count eight, a digit is missing.
Many Ugandans simply are not on it. The country had about 11 million WhatsApp subscriptions against 49 million active mobile subscriptions in mid-2026 - PC Tech Magazine, and feature phones outnumber smartphones. Election-period internet shutdowns can also silence app calls entirely. Calling the person's mobile number directly reaches any working SIM, smartphone or not.
