From New York and California families with Austrian roots to descendants of 1938 refugees reclaiming Austrian citizenship, callers to Austria meet phone numbers of every length, office extensions tacked onto the end, and a regulator that advises Austrians, when in doubt, not to answer or return calls from unknown numbers.

To reach a Austria number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.
011 43 664 123456
From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +43 664 123456 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.
Numbers in Austria are written locally with a 0 in front, like 0664 123456. Calling from abroad you leave that 0 out, so it becomes +43 664 123456.
Mobile numbers in Austria are not all the same length (this example has 9 digits after +43), so a different count is not a mistake in itself. If a call does not connect, check the start of the number against the rule above.
Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 43 and the number stay exactly the same.
A ~ means wait for the second dial tone before dialing the rest. It is not a digit you press.

About 576,000 Americans (575,672 in the 2024 American Community Survey) report Austrian ancestry - Census Reporter. The largest numbers live in California, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin has the highest share of any state - Census Reporter. Behind those figures sits a painful chapter: by 1941 some 29,000 Jewish Austrians had fled to the United States, and about 40,000 more Austrians emigrated there between 1945 and 1960 - Austrian Americans.
That history now drives a modern corridor. Since 1 September 2020, people who left Austria before 15 May 1955 because of Nazi persecution, and all of their direct descendants, can claim Austrian citizenship without giving up their existing one. Applicants must document the persecuted ancestor's Austrian citizenship with papers such as a birth certificate, passport or Heimatschein, plus proof of descent - Austrian nationality law, so tracking down records in Austria is part of the process. Traffic also runs the other way: at the start of 2026, 17,297 people living in Austria had been born in North America - Statistik Austria.
Austrians dial 00 before a country code, or + on a mobile - Wikipedia, so the US is 00 1 and ten digits. The busiest routes follow a population in which 22.9% of Austria's 9.2 million residents were born abroad at the start of 2026, led by people born in Germany (275,684), Bosnia and Herzegovina (181,243), Turkey (166,608), Romania (148,731), Serbia (141,785), Syria (101,786), Hungary (100,588) and Ukraine (95,327) - Statistik Austria. So +49, +387, +90, +40 and +381 are everyday prefixes for many Austrian families.
Much of that calling has moved into apps. RTR, the regulator, found that in 2025 internet-based services such as WhatsApp handled roughly twice as many voice minutes as conventional fixed and mobile telephony, a gap of about 5 billion minutes, while conventional minutes stayed largely flat - RTR. A regular phone call still reaches people without data or apps, which matters for older relatives and for offices.
Dial the exit code: 011 from a US or Canadian phone, or + on a mobile or browser dialer.
Dial Austria's country code, 43.
Drop the leading 0: the mobile 0664 123456 becomes 664 123456, and the Vienna number 01 2345678 becomes 1 2345678.
Dial every remaining digit exactly as given, including any extension written after a hyphen, because Austrian numbers vary in length: the example becomes 011 43 664 123456, or +43 664 123456 on a mobile.
Drop the trunk 0 after +43, then dial every digit you were given - Wikipedia. There is no single correct length: landlines run anywhere from 4 to 13 digits after +43 depending on the local network and extension, and mobiles from 7 to 13. Write extensions straight on without the hyphen (01 58058-0 becomes +43 1 58058 0) - RTR. Remember that 0662 is Salzburg, not a mobile - RTR, and that since 2024 Austrian networks hide caller IDs on foreign-routed calls that pretend to be Austrian, so call with your real US number - RTR.
Austrian numbers come in every length. Austria runs an open numbering plan in which neither area codes nor subscriber numbers have a standard length, and some subscriber numbers are as short as three digits - Wikipedia. More than 1,000 local networks have their own codes, from Vienna's 01 to four-digit codes such as Villach's 04242 - RTR, so a perfectly valid number can look too short or too long to an outsider. Do not pad, trim or regroup it: drop the leading 0 and dial exactly the digits you were given.
Fake Austrian caller IDs are now suppressed. A 2023 amendment to the numbering ordinance, in force since 21 December 2023, makes carriers mark calls arriving from abroad that show an Austrian number, and the receiving network then suppresses the displayed number unless it can verify the call, for example an Austrian mobile that is roaming abroad - RTR. RTR says that until September 2024 providers could hardly detect spoofed numbers, but that an Austrian number on the display can now in principle be trusted, while foreign numbers still have no effective protection against spoofing - RTR. A call from the US that shows your real US number displays normally, but one that presents an Austrian caller ID through a foreign route may arrive with no number at all.
Official advice: when in doubt, do not answer. RTR tells Austrians that ping calls mostly come from foreign numbers and advises: when in doubt, do not answer an unknown number, and do not call back, because a genuine caller will try again - RTR. Reports of fraudulent calls and texts rose sharply in 2025 - RTR. A first call from an unfamiliar +1 number may simply ring out, so send a message or leave a voicemail saying who you are, then call again.
06 does not always mean mobile. Mobile codes such as 0660 and 0664 sit right next to 0662, the landline code of the city of Salzburg, and dozens of small-town codes from 06131 to 06589 also start with 06 - RTR. A contact saved as 0662 is a Salzburg landline, and the difference tells you whether you are about to ring a home or office or a person's mobile.
Austria's official list of local networks runs to more than 1,000 codes. Vienna is the only one-digit code (01), five cities have three-digit codes (0316 Graz, 0463 Klagenfurt, 0512 Innsbruck, 0662 Salzburg, 0732 Linz), and every other place has four digits after the 0, such as 02682 Eisenstadt or 05572 Dornbirn - RTR. Larger towns get shorter codes so they can have longer subscriber numbers, and Vienna's code was once 0222 - Wikipedia.
Mobiles vary too. 0664 123456 and 0664 1234567 can both be valid numbers, and after +43 a mobile can run anywhere from 7 to 13 digits. In international form the leading 0 goes, so 0664 123456 becomes +43 664 123456 and the Vienna number 01 2345678 becomes +43 1 2345678. Because length proves nothing, the only safe check is to compare the digits with what the person gave you, grouped the way they wrote them.
Austrian offices publish a base number and a Durchwahl, a direct-dial extension written after a hyphen. RTR's number-structure guide counts these extra digits as part of the number itself, describing them as an extension of the national number that includes any direct-dial extension - RTR. The regulator's own main line is printed +43 1 58058-0 - RTR, where 58058 is the Vienna base number and the digit after the hyphen is the extension.
From the US you dial the whole thing in one run, without the hyphen: 011 43 1 58058 0. To reach a person directly, swap in their extension after the same base, which is why business cards from the same company show one base number with different endings after the hyphen. Unlike a US extension, there is no menu or pause: the digits go through as one longer number. If an extension does not answer, dialing the base number with the switchboard extension is the way back to reception.
Austria's mobiles share their first digits with landlines. The original network codes are 0664 for A1, 0676 for Magenta (then T-Mobile) and 0660 and 0699 for Drei, with budget brands using codes such as 0650, 0677, 0680, 0681, 0688 and 0690 - Wikipedia. Yet the same 06 block holds 95 landline codes: 0662 for the city of Salzburg and four-digit codes from 06131 (Obertraun) and 06132 (Bad Ischl) to 06542 (Zell am See) and 06589 (Unken) - RTR.
So read the digits after 06 carefully. 0662 followed by a subscriber number is a Salzburg home or office; 0664 is an A1 mobile, at least originally, because number portability means a mobile code no longer proves the network - Wikipedia. For dialing it makes no difference, since both become +43 followed by the number without its 0, but it tells you whether you are ringing a desk in Salzburg or a phone in someone's pocket.
Austria had about 13.8 million SIM cards in use at the end of 2025, excluding machine-to-machine cards. A1 led with 36.2%, followed by Magenta with 24.9% and Drei with 20.1%, while virtual operators without their own networks reached 18.8%, led by HoT (9.9%) and spusu (5.5%) - RTR. Magenta is the 2019 merger of T-Mobile Austria and the cable operator UPC Austria - Magenta Telekom, so a contact once labeled T-Mobile keeps the same number under the Magenta name unless it was ported elsewhere.
More brands are coming: RTR reports that Austria's postal service and the Vienna utility Wien Energie announced plans to launch mobile services in 2026 - RTR. For callers abroad none of this changes how to dial, because every network and brand uses ordinary +43 numbers, but it explains the unfamiliar operator names a relative may mention when their bill or SIM changes.
RTR's consumer guide sorts the special ranges clearly. 0800 numbers are free to call, 0810, 0820 and 0821 carry capped tariffs, and 0900, 0901, 0930, 0931 and 0939 are value-added numbers with higher charges - RTR. 0720 numbers are location-independent landlines, 0780 numbers are internet (ENUM) telephony, and codes such as 0501 to 0509, 057 and 059 belong to private company networks - RTR.
From the US, the location-independent and company-network numbers dial like any other Austrian number: +43, then the number without its 0. The free and capped tariffs are rules for calls made within Austria, so when an organization lists only an 0800 or 0810 number, look for a geographic number, such as a Vienna 01 line, before dialing. Emergency short codes such as 112, 122 (fire), 133 (police) and 144 (ambulance) - Wikipedia are for use inside Austria and cannot be dialed from the US.
Yes. The leading 0 is a domestic trunk prefix. Dial 011 43 (or +43) and the rest of the number: 0664 123456 becomes +43 664 123456, and Vienna's 01 2345678 becomes +43 1 2345678 - Wikipedia. Keep every other digit, including extensions after a hyphen, because Austrian numbers have no fixed length to fall back on.
Austria uses an open numbering plan: area codes and subscriber numbers vary in length, and some subscriber numbers are only three digits - Wikipedia. Vienna's code is 01, the next largest cities use three-digit codes such as 0316 Graz, and more than 1,000 smaller networks use four-digit codes such as 04242 Villach - RTR. Offices also add extensions, so two valid numbers can differ by several digits.
Dial it straight through without the hyphen. A number printed 01 58058-0, like the regulator RTR's main line - RTR, becomes +43 1 58058 0. The digits after the hyphen are part of the number, not a separate step - RTR. Replace them with a person's own extension to reach their desk directly, or use the switchboard extension to reach reception.
No. 0662 is the landline code for the city of Salzburg, and 94 other landline codes, from 06131 to 06589, also start with 06 - RTR. Mobile codes include 0664 (A1), 0676 (Magenta) and 0660 and 0699 (Drei) - Wikipedia. Both types are dialed the same way from the US: +43 and the number without its leading 0.
Austria is normally 6 hours ahead of US Eastern and 9 ahead of Pacific. The EU moves clocks on the last Sundays of March and October - European Commission, while the US moves them on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November - NIST. For two to three weeks in March and one week in late October the gap is 5 and 8 hours.
Often because official advice tells them to be careful. RTR warns that ping calls mostly come from foreign numbers and advises Austrians, when in doubt, not to answer unknown numbers and not to call back - RTR. Send a message or leave a voicemail first saying who you are, and make sure your call shows your real US number rather than an Austrian caller ID, which networks now suppress - RTR.
