From Astoria tavernas and Chicago's Greektown to a daughter in Boston checking on her parents' 210 landline in Athens, or a traveler confirming a room on Santorini, calling Greece means +30 and ten digits dialed exactly as written, with nothing dropped and nothing added.

To reach a Greece number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.
011 30 691 234 5678
From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +30 691 234 5678 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.
Numbers in Greece carry no leading trunk digit, so there is nothing to strip. 691 234 5678 is dialed exactly as written, with +30 in front. Removing a digit here is what makes the call fail.
A Greece mobile number is 10 digits after +30. If a call does not connect, count the digits first.
Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 30 and the number stay exactly the same.
A ~ means wait for the second dial tone before dialing the rest. It is not a digit you press.

About 1.2 million Americans report Greek ancestry - US Census Bureau, ACS 2024, and roughly 117,000 were born in Greece - US Census Bureau, ACS 2024. The largest communities are in New York (about 137,000), California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts, while New Hampshire and Massachusetts have the highest Greek shares of any state, at 1.3% and 1.0% - US Census Bureau, ACS 2019-2023. In New York the center of gravity is Astoria, Queens, where a Greek neighborhood coalesced in the late 1960s around tavernas, bakeries and Greek Orthodox churches - Wikipedia. These are the calls from a Queens kitchen to a mother's 210 landline in Athens, or to cousins on a 69x mobile in Crete or the Peloponnese.
Greece's diaspora is global, and so is the inbound traffic. Its centers include Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Munich, London, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Toronto and Montreal - Wikipedia. Australia stands out: in the state of Victoria alone, 50,380 residents were born in Greece in 2021, one of the state's ten largest overseas-born groups - Australian Bureau of Statistics. Business and travel add a seasonal layer, as visitors ring hotels, ferry agents and villa owners on the islands, whose four-digit codes (2286 for Santorini, 2289 for Mykonos, 2241 for Rhodes) mark them out at a glance.
Greeks dial out with 00, and on a mobile + works the same way - Wikipedia. So the US is 00 1, Cyprus 00 357 and Albania 00 355. The national numbering plan still includes carrier selection and pre-selection codes - EETT, but ordinary callers simply dial 00 and the number. Greece's own immigrant population shapes where calls go: Albanians form the largest immigrant community in the country, and the 2011 census counted about 480,000 Albanian immigrants - Wikipedia, so calls to Albania are routine for one of the country's largest communities. The diaspora cities above work in reverse too, as parents in Athens and Thessaloniki call children abroad.
Inside Greece there is no trunk prefix and no local shortcut. Since 2002 every call, even to a neighbor, uses all ten digits, so an Athenian dials 210 for a number across the street and 2310 for Thessaloniki. The only shorter numbers are service codes in the 1 range, three to five digits long, such as 112 for emergencies, 100 for the police, 166 for ambulances and 199 for the fire service - Wikipedia. Like the Athens transport line 11185, these are dialed only from phones inside Greece.
Dial the US exit code 011, or type + on a mobile or in a browser dialer.
Dial Greece's country code, 30.
Dial all ten digits exactly as written, including the 0 in codes such as 210 or 2310: the Athens landline 210 123 4567 becomes 011 30 210 123 4567.
Dial mobiles the same way: 697 123 4567 becomes +30 697 123 4567, with nothing added or taken away.
If you have an old number from before 2002 with fewer digits, convert it to the ten-digit format first; an old Athens number that began 01 now begins 210.
Greece has no trunk prefix: every number, landline or mobile, is 10 digits after +30, and the 0 you see in 210 or 2310 is part of the number - Wikipedia. Landlines start with 2 and mobiles with 69. Numbers beginning 800 (toll-free) and 801 (shared-cost) are designed for callers inside Greece, 901 and 909 are premium-rate, and short codes such as 112, 100 or 11185 only work from phones in Greece. If a number has only seven or eight digits, it predates the 2002 reform and must be converted before it will connect.
The 0 in 210 is part of the number. Strictly speaking, Athens's area code is 21, and the 0 that follows is the first digit of the subscriber number, inserted during the 2002 reform; many Greeks themselves think the code is 210 - Wikipedia. What matters to a caller is that nothing comes off: the number has ten digits inside Greece and the same ten digits after +30. Someone who habitually trims a 0 after the country code turns 210 123 4567 into the nine-digit +30 21 123 4567, and the call fails. Count ten digits after +30 every time.
Old Greek numbers need converting. Every number in the country changed twice. In 2001 a 0 was inserted after each area code, and in 2002 the area code's leading 0 became a 2 for landlines and a 6 for mobiles, so an Athens number once dialed from abroad as +30 1 xxx xxxx became +30 210 xxx xxxx, and an old mobile beginning 094 now begins 694 - Wikipedia. Address books, old letters and genealogy records from before 2002 are full of the old formats; convert them before dialing.
Toll-free and shared-cost lines are built for callers in Greece. Numbers beginning 800 are toll-free and 801 numbers are shared-cost lines charged like a local call anywhere in the country - Wikipedia. Both are designed around domestic callers. From the US, look for the organization's ordinary landline in the 21x or 2xxx range, which behaves like any other international call.
A US evening is the middle of the night in Greece. With Greece 7 hours ahead of US Eastern for most of the year - Wikipedia, an after-work call at 6pm ET rings at 1am in Athens, and a landline wakes the whole household. Mornings in the US line up with Greek afternoons and early evenings, and a Sunday morning call from the East Coast reaches Greece on Sunday afternoon.
Greece runs a closed ten-digit numbering plan in which the first digit tells you the kind of service: 1 for short codes, 2 for geographic landlines, 6 for mobiles, 8 for reduced-rate services such as 800 and 801, and 9 for premium-rate lines, with 901 for general services and 909 for adult services - Wikipedia. The regulator EETT allocates and manages the national numbering plan - EETT.
Landline codes get shorter as places get bigger. 21 (Athens, Piraeus and Elefsina) is the only two-digit code and carries an eight-digit subscriber number; Thessaloniki (231), Patras (261), Larissa (241), Heraklion (281), Kavala (251) and Tripoli (271) have three-digit codes with seven-digit numbers; everywhere else uses a four-digit code and a six-digit number, so the total is always ten - Wikipedia. In everyday use Greeks quote the codes with the next digit included, as 210, 2310 or 2810.
The second digit of a landline code points to a region: 22 for Central Greece and the Aegean islands, 23 for Central Macedonia, 24 for Thessaly and West Macedonia, 25 for East Macedonia and Thrace, 26 for Western Greece, the Ionian islands and Epirus, 27 for the Peloponnese and 28 for Crete - Wikipedia. A number beginning 28 is on Crete, and one beginning 2241 is on Rhodes.
Unlike much of northern Europe, Greece has not given up the home phone. In December 2024 there were 4,673,246 fixed telephone lines, a penetration of 44.9% of the population, down 3.8% in a year, and OTE, the former state monopoly, still held 55.2% of them - EETT. A parent or grandparent in Athens, Thessaloniki or a Peloponnese village may well pick up the house phone before a mobile.
The number itself hints at its history. Codes that end in 0, such as 210 and 2310, are or were originally OTE lines, while in Athens and Thessaloniki numbers such as 211 or 212 are increasingly common, especially for businesses - Wikipedia. Either way, you dial all ten digits.
Timing matters more for a landline than for a mobile, because it rings in a shared space. Calls between 7am and 1pm ET arrive in the Greek afternoon or early evening, when an older relative is most likely to be home and awake; anything after about 4pm ET lands after 11pm in Greece.
Greece has three mobile networks. Measured by total connections at the end of 2024, OTE's network, sold as Cosmote, had 44.4%, Vodafone 34.1% and Nova 21.5%, out of 16.1 million connections, about 13.5 million of them active - EETT. The names keep moving. Cosmote was absorbed into its parent OTE in January 2024, and in June 2026 the company announced that Cosmote Telekom would be renamed simply Telekom in autumn 2026 - CNN Greece. Wind merged into Nova in January 2023 and dropped its own brand - Wikipedia.
The original mobile prefixes still hint at that history: 690 and 693 were first assigned to Wind (now Nova), 694 and 695 to Vodafone, 697 and 698 to Cosmote, and 699 to Q-Telecom, which merged with Wind in 2007 - Wikipedia. Portability has since scrambled the map, with 633,665 mobile numbers ported in 2024 alone - EETT. Treat any 69x number simply as a Greek mobile: it is dialed the same way whichever network carries it.
Greece follows the Orthodox calendar for Easter, so its biggest holiday often falls on a different Sunday from Easter in the US: in 2026 Western Easter was 5 April and Orthodox Easter 12 April - Wikipedia. Orthodox Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, as are Clean Monday, 25 March, 1 May, Orthodox Whit Monday, the Dormition on 15 August, Oxi Day on 28 October and Christmas, and many municipalities also give schools a day off for their patron saint - Wikipedia.
Name days matter as much as birthdays. Greek children are traditionally named after a grandparent, and anyone named after a saint celebrates on that saint's feast: Christos and Christina on Christmas Day, Vasilis on New Year's Day, Anastasios and Anastasia on Easter Sunday, and Maria on the Dormition or the Presentation of Mary - Wikipedia. A call on the day, with the traditional wish chronia polla (many years), is the easiest way for family abroad to join in.
The practical upshot for 15 August: a national holiday and the name day of many a Maria make it a good day for a family call and a poor one for reaching an office.
Greece's code is +30, and nothing is dropped: Greece has used a closed ten-digit plan with no trunk prefix since 2002 - Wikipedia. An Athens number written 210 123 4567 is dialed +30 210 123 4567, or 011 30 210 123 4567 from a US landline. The 0 in 210 is part of the number itself, so keep it.
Every dialable Greek number has 10 digits, apart from short service codes in the 1 range - Wikipedia. Athens uses the two-digit code 21 plus eight digits, cities such as Thessaloniki (231) and Heraklion (281) three-digit codes plus seven digits, and smaller places four-digit codes plus six digits, so the total is always ten after +30.
Mobiles start with 69 (690, 693, 694, 695, 697, 698 or 699) and landlines with 2 (210 for Athens, 2310 for Thessaloniki). Both are ten digits. Because 633,665 mobile numbers switched networks in 2024 alone - EETT, the 69x prefix no longer tells you whether someone is with Cosmote (now Telekom), Vodafone or Nova, and it makes no difference to how you dial.
Greece changed numbers in two steps: in 2001 a 0 was inserted after the area code, and in 2002 the area code's leading 0 became a 2 for landlines and a 6 for mobiles - Wikipedia. So an Athens number once written (01) 234 5678 is now 210 234 5678, dialed +30 210 234 5678, and an old mobile beginning 094 now begins 694.
Greece is 7 hours ahead of US Eastern and 10 hours ahead of US Pacific for most of the year, on EET (UTC+2) in winter and EEST (UTC+3) in summer - Wikipedia. Summer time runs from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October - European Commission. Because the US changes clocks on different dates, the gap is 6 and 9 hours from 8 to 28 March 2026 and 25 to 31 October 2026. Calling 7am to 1pm ET reaches Greek afternoons and early evenings.
The networks are the same, but the names have changed. In June 2026 OTE announced that Cosmote Telekom would be renamed simply Telekom in autumn 2026 - CNN Greece, and Wind merged into Nova in January 2023 - Wikipedia. Numbers did not change in either case, so a relative's old 697 or 693 number is dialed exactly as before: +30 and all ten digits.
