What to dial

To reach a Belgium number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.

011
+
Belgium code
32
+
The number
450 00 12 34
The complete number

011 32 450 00 12 34

From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +32 450 00 12 34 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.

Drop the leading 0

Numbers in Belgium are written locally with a 0 in front, like 0450 00 12 34. Calling from abroad you leave that 0 out, so it becomes +32 450 00 12 34.

A Belgium mobile number is 9 digits after +32. If a call does not connect, count the digits first.

Calling Belgium from somewhere other than the United States?

Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 32 and the number stay exactly the same.

Any number, nothing to install.

Belgium at a glance

Country code
+32
Notable area codes
Brussels 02, Antwerp 03, Liège 04, Ghent 09, Bruges 050, Leuven 016, Mechelen 015, Hasselt 011, Kortrijk 056, Mons 065, Charleroi 071, Namur 081. The four biggest cities have one-digit codes followed by seven digits; everywhere else has a two-digit code followed by six.
Mobile vs landline
Mobiles have 10 digits written locally and start 045 to 049 (for example 0470 12 34 56), so 9 digits after +32. Landlines have 9 digits locally and 8 after +32. Liège landlines also start 04 but continue with 2 or 3 and are one digit shorter: 04 223 45 67 is a Liège home phone, while 0472 23 45 67 is a mobile.
Time zone
One zone: CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October on the EU schedule (in 2026, March 29 to October 25).
Best time to reach someone
Brussels is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern and 9 hours ahead of US Pacific for most of the year. Evening family calls (6pm to 9pm in Belgium) fit noon to 3pm ET or 9am to noon PT; office hours (9am to 5pm) overlap best from 7am to 11am ET or 6am to 8am PT. From the second to the last Sunday of March, and from the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November (in 2026, March 8 to 29 and October 25 to November 1), the gap narrows to 5 and 8 hours, so call one hour later by your own clock.

Who calls Belgium, and where Belgium calls

Calling in to Belgium

Belgian roots in the US are modest in number but tightly clustered. 312,593 Americans report Belgian ancestry in the 2024 American Community Survey - Census Reporter, and Wisconsin leads the states with about 42,000, ahead of Michigan with about 38,000 - Census Reporter. Northeastern Wisconsin is the heartland: 17% of Kewaunee County and 9% of Door County report Belgian ancestry, as do about 16,800 people in Brown County around Green Bay - Census Reporter; Kewaunee's share is the highest of any US county - Census Reporter. The settlement goes back to Bay Settlement, founded in 1853 by a Belgian missionary and a group of immigrants, and to towns named Namur and Brussels, Wisconsin; Detroit grew its own Flemish community, whose St. Charles Borromeo church was built by Flemish immigrants in 1912 - Belgian Americans.

Belgium's other US link is institutional. Brussels hosts NATO's headquarters and the main EU institutions, and the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux supports American personnel at SHAPE in Casteau near Mons, at Chièvres Air Base, and in Brussels, where its Sterrebeek annex houses the Brussels American School - U.S. Army Garrison Benelux. Casteau shares the 065 area code with Mons - Wikipedia, and the garrison places Chièvres in the same province, Hainaut, in French-speaking Wallonia - U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, so French is the language of the local switchboards and shops those families deal with.

Calling out from Belgium

Belgians dial out with 00, or + on a mobile, followed by the country code, so the US is 00 1 and then ten digits - Wikipedia. The busiest personal routes reflect a very diverse population: on 1 January 2025, 36% of Belgium's roughly 11.8 million residents had a foreign background, and more than half of that group traces its origins to countries outside the EU - EMN Belgium. The largest communities have roots in Italy, Morocco, France, Turkey, the Netherlands and the DR Congo - Demographics of Belgium, so calls to +39, +212, +33, +90, +31 and +243 are part of daily life for many households.

Brussels concentrates much of that traffic. In the capital region, 40.8% of residents are Belgians with a foreign background and another 37.2% are foreign nationals - EMN Belgium, and about 45% of Belgium's Moroccan-origin population lives there - Moroccans in Belgium. A Belgian living in the US who calls home should use a line that shows a genuine caller ID, such as a US number, because of the anti-spoofing rule described below.

Dialing Belgium, step by step

  1. 1

Dial the exit code: 011 from a US or Canadian phone, or + on a mobile or browser dialer.

  2. 2

    Dial Belgium's country code, 32.

  3. 3

    Drop the leading 0: the mobile 0450 00 12 34 becomes 450 00 12 34, and the Brussels number 02 234 56 78 becomes 2 234 56 78.

  4. 4

    Check the length: a mobile has 9 digits after 32 and a landline 8, so the full example is 011 32 450 00 12 34, or +32 450 00 12 34 on a mobile.

  5. 5

If the number starts 04, count the digits first: 10 written locally means a mobile, 9 means a Liège landline.

Drop the trunk 0 after +32 - Wikipedia. Mobiles are 9 digits after +32 and all landlines 8 digits after +32, which is also how you separate a mobile (045x to 049x) from a Liège landline (04 2 or 04 3) - BIPT numbering plan. Treat 070 and 090x numbers as premium service lines, not personal phones - BIPT. And since 2024, Belgian networks block calls from abroad that display a Belgian caller ID, so call with a line that shows your genuine US number - BIPT.

What trips people up when calling Belgium

Belgium blocks calls from abroad that show a Belgian number. Under a Royal Decree of 12 May 2024, international calls to Belgian numbers that display a Belgian caller ID must be blocked, for landline numbers since 1 September 2024 and for mobile numbers since 1 December 2024 - BIPT. Narrow exceptions exist for registered cloud and nomadic internet-telephony services, and the rule does not touch calls that display a foreign number - BIPT. In June 2026 the regulator added that the receiving Belgian operator alone is responsible for the blocking - ICT Rechtswijzer. The practical upshot: a call from the US that shows your real US number goes through, while an app or service that presents a Belgian caller ID from abroad can be stopped at the border.

The 04 prefix hides two different things. Liège landlines start 04 2 or 04 3 and have nine digits in local form, while every Belgian mobile starts 045 to 049 and has ten - BIPT numbering plan. Landlines in Liège never begin 04 5 through 04 9 - Wikipedia, so if a number from a relative in Liège starts 047 and has only nine digits, a digit is missing; count before you dial rather than guessing from the first two digits.

Special numbers need care from abroad. 070 and 090x numbers carry a premium charge inside Belgium - BIPT, 078 is the national-rate range and 0800 the freephone range - BIPT numbering plan. Before dialing one of these from the US, check whether the organization lists a separate number for callers abroad, as the card-blocking service Card Stop does with +32 78 170 170 - Febelfin.

Belgians are primed to distrust calls about cards and banks. In May 2024 Febelfin warned of fraudsters calling from Belgian phone numbers while posing as Card Stop staff, often opening with an automated message, and stressed that Card Stop never phones cardholders proactively to report fraud - Febelfin. If you are calling a relative about money, a bank card or a transfer, say who you are at the start so the person knows the call is genuine.

Three languages, and city names that change with them

Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, spoken by about 60% of the population, French by about 40% and German by under 1% - Demographics of Belgium. The phone map loosely follows the language map. Antwerp 03, Ghent 09, Bruges 050, Leuven 016 and Hasselt 011 are in Dutch-speaking Flanders, while Liège 04, Charleroi 071, Namur 081 and Mons 065 are in French-speaking Wallonia - Wikipedia. Greet in the language of the region you are calling and switch to English if it stalls; some national services work in several languages, and Card Stop, for example, answers around the clock in French, Dutch and English - Febelfin.

The trap for foreign callers is that many cities have two names. Liège is Luik in Dutch, Mons is Bergen, Mechelen is Malines, Leuven is Louvain, Kortrijk is Courtrai and Tournai is Doornik - Wikipedia. A cousin in Antwerp may tell you a relative lives in Bergen, which means Mons and the 065 area code, not Norway. When an address and an area code seem not to match, check the other language's name before assuming the number is wrong.

Liège or mobile: reading an 04 number

Belgium's regulator splits the 04 block cleanly. In the national numbering plan, 042 and 043 are Liège geographic numbers, 045 through 049 are mobile, and 040, 041 and 044 are unassigned - BIPT numbering plan. Liège landlines have nine digits written locally (04 223 45 67) and mobiles ten (0472 23 45 67), so the digit count settles it. Mobile prefixes once revealed the network: 047x meant Proximus, 048x BASE and 049x Orange, with 0467 and 0468 issued to Telenet, but with number portability a prefix no longer says who carries the line - Wikipedia.

In international form the leading 0 disappears: 0472 23 45 67 becomes +32 472 23 45 67, and the Liège landline 04 223 45 67 becomes +32 4 223 45 67. After +32 a mobile always has nine digits and a landline eight, whether it is a Brussels 02 number or a small-town line such as Tournai 069. Save numbers in +32 form with the spaces the owner used: Belgians group mobiles as 04xx xx xx xx, which makes a missing digit easier to spot.

Proximus, Orange, Telenet, Digi and the fading landline

Belgium had 12.71 million active SIM cards at the end of 2024. Proximus held 40 to 50% of them, while Orange (which completed its takeover of the cable operator VOO in June 2023) and Telenet (including its BASE brand) each held 20 to 30% - BIPT. A fourth operator arrived on 11 December 2024, when Digi launched mobile voice and data on Proximus's network under a five-year wholesale deal while building its own 5G network with Citymesh, aimed at covering at least 30% of the population by the end of 2025 and 70% by 2028 - BIPT.

Fixed lines are fading quickly. Fixed telephone subscriptions fell by 280,094 in 2024 to 2.49 million, the share of households with a landline dropped from 40% to 36%, and fixed call minutes fell by 12.9% in a single year - BIPT. For a caller abroad the lesson is simple: the family home number you remember may be gone, and the person you want is more likely on an 04xx mobile than on the 02 or 09 line written in an old address book.

0800, 070, 078 and 090x: Belgium's special numbers

Belgium's numbering plan reserves 0800 for freephone services, 070 and 090x for premium-rate services, 078 for national-rate services and 077 for machine-to-machine lines - BIPT numbering plan. Calls to 070 and 090x numbers carry a premium charge in Belgium, with different tariff tiers across the 0900 to 0909 prefixes - BIPT. None of these ranges is a person's line, so if a relative gives you a number starting 070, 078, 0800 or 090x, it belongs to a business or service.

Card Stop, the national line for blocking lost or stolen bank cards, shows how the ranges are used in practice. It moved from the premium 070 344 344 to 078 170 170 on 10 January 2022, runs around the clock in French, Dutch and English, and tells callers abroad to dial +32 78 170 170 - Febelfin. When a Belgian company lists only an 0800 or 070 number, look for a number meant for callers outside Belgium before dialing, and use its regular 02, 03 or 09 landline if it publishes one.

Brussels: the 02 city of two languages and many nationalities

The 02 area code covers Brussels, the officially bilingual capital where an estimated 85% of residents use French at home and about 10% use Dutch - Demographics of Belgium. It is also Belgium's most diverse region: 40.8% of its residents are Belgians with a foreign background and 37.2% are foreign nationals - EMN Belgium. A Brussels landline has the one-digit code 2 plus seven digits, so 02 234 56 78 becomes +32 2 234 56 78 from abroad - Wikipedia.

For Americans the city is a workplace as much as a destination. Alongside NATO's headquarters and the EU institutions, the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux runs a Brussels campus and the Sterrebeek annex with the Brussels American School and a health clinic - U.S. Army Garrison Benelux. Anyone phoning a colleague there from the US should expect office numbers on 02 and personal numbers on 04xx mobiles, and should dial both with +32 and without the leading 0, from a line that shows a real caller ID.

Questions about calling Belgium

How do I tell a Liège landline from a Belgian mobile number?

Count the digits and look at the third one. A Belgian mobile has 10 digits written locally and starts 045 to 049, while a Liège landline has 9 digits and starts 042 or 043 - BIPT numbering plan. So 0472 23 45 67 is a mobile and 04 223 45 67 is a home or office phone in Liège. From abroad they become +32 472 23 45 67 and +32 4 223 45 67.

Do I drop the 0 when calling Belgium from the US?

Yes. Dial 011 32 (or +32) and then the number without its leading 0: Brussels 02 234 56 78 becomes +32 2 234 56 78, and the mobile 0450 00 12 34 becomes +32 450 00 12 34 - Wikipedia. Keeping the 0 adds a digit the Belgian network does not expect, and the call is likely to fail.

How many digits are in a Belgian phone number?

Written locally, a landline has 9 digits and a mobile 10, including the leading 0 - Wikipedia. After +32 that becomes 8 digits for any landline, from Brussels 02 to a small town like Tournai 069, and 9 digits for a mobile. If your number does not fit one of those lengths, a digit is missing or extra.

Why was my call to Belgium blocked when my phone showed a Belgian number?

Since 1 September 2024 for landline numbers and 1 December 2024 for mobile numbers, Belgian operators must block international calls to Belgian numbers that display a Belgian caller ID, with narrow exceptions for registered services - BIPT. The rule targets spoofing, so a call that shows your real US number is not affected by it. Switch off any app setting that presents a Belgian number and call with your own caller ID.

What is the time difference between Belgium and the US?

Belgium is normally 6 hours ahead of US Eastern and 9 ahead of Pacific. The EU switches clocks on the last Sundays of March and October - European Commission, while the US switches on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November - NIST. For two to three weeks in March and one week in late October the gap is 5 and 8 hours instead.

Can I call Card Stop or a Belgian 070 or 0800 number from the US?

Card Stop, yes: it publishes +32 78 170 170 for callers abroad and answers around the clock in French, Dutch and English - Febelfin. For other special numbers, 070 and 090x are premium lines - BIPT, and for those or 0800 freephone numbers the safer route is the organization's regular 02, 03 or 09 number or a dedicated number for callers abroad.
