What to dial

To reach a Sweden number from the United States, dial these three parts in order.

011
+
Sweden code
46
+
The number
70 123 45 67
The complete number

011 46 70 123 45 67

From any mobile, anywhere in the world, you can dial +46 70 123 45 67 instead. Press and hold 0 to type the +, and the phone picks the right access code for wherever you are.

Drop the leading 0

Numbers in Sweden are written locally with a 0 in front, like 070-123 45 67. Calling from abroad you leave that 0 out, so it becomes +46 70 123 45 67.

A Sweden mobile number is 9 digits after +46. If a call does not connect, count the digits first.

Calling Sweden from somewhere other than the United States?

Only the first part changes. Your access code replaces the 011, then 46 and the number stay exactly the same.

Mobile vs landline
Mobiles start 070, 072, 073, 076 or 079 and are always 10 digits written locally (070-123 45 67), which is 9 digits after +46. Landlines start with a 2- to 4-digit area code that includes the 0 (08 for Stockholm, 0980 for Kiruna), so they run 8 to 10 digits in total. 010 (location-independent) and 075 (personal numbering) are non-geographic, and 020 freephone numbers do not work from abroad.
Time zone
One zone: Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) in winter and Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) in summer. Sweden changes clocks with the rest of the EU on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October (29 March and 25 October 2026).
Best time to reach someone
Sweden is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern and 9 hours ahead of US Pacific for most of the year, but only 5 and 8 hours ahead while the US is on daylight time and Europe is not (8 to 28 March 2026 and 25 to 31 October 2026). From the East Coast, 8am to 2pm ET reaches 2pm to 8pm in Stockholm; from the West Coast, 7am to 11am PT reaches 4pm to 8pm. Weekends are Saturday and Sunday.

Who calls Sweden, and where Sweden calls

Calling in to Sweden

About 3.25 million Americans report Swedish ancestry, and the heart of that community is Minnesota, home to roughly 354,000 of them (about 6% of the state), followed by California, Illinois and Washington - US Census Bureau, ACS 2024. Many of these are heritage calls: a family in the Twin Cities keeping up with second cousins in Uppsala (018) or Örebro (019), or phoning a parish office about old church records. The weekly family traffic comes from the roughly 45,000 people born in Sweden who now live in the US, calling parents on an 070 or 073 mobile - US Census Bureau, ACS 2024.

The lane runs both ways. At the end of 2025, 26,285 people born in the United States lived in Sweden, and their families dial +46 to reach them - Statistics Sweden. Sweden is also a country of immigrants: 2.2 million residents, just over 20% of the population, were born abroad - Statistics Sweden. That makes Stockholm, Gothenburg (031) and Malmö (040) destinations for relatives calling from across the Middle East, the rest of Europe and the Horn of Africa, not only from the US.

Calling out from Sweden

Dialing out of Sweden starts with 00, the international prefix that replaced the old 009 in 1999 - Wikipedia. So the US is 00 1 plus the 10-digit number, Finland 00 358 and Norway 00 47; on a mobile, + does the same job. Where Swedes call follows who lives in Sweden: at the end of 2025 the largest foreign-born groups came from Syria (194,606), Iraq (141,451), Finland (122,462), Poland (98,311) and Iran (87,292), followed by Afghanistan, Somalia and India, while 38,934 residents were born in neighboring Norway - Statistics Sweden. Family calls out of Sweden follow that same map.

One outbound quirk matters to Swedes who travel or live abroad. Since 3 March 2025, Swedish operators stop calls arriving from abroad that display a Swedish mobile number unless a check shows the number really is in use abroad - PTS. A Swede roaming in the US with a Swedish SIM can still ring home, but an internet calling app that displays a Swedish number while that SIM sits at home in Sweden can be blocked as a spoof.

Dialing Sweden, step by step

  1. 1

Dial the US exit code 011, or type + if you are calling from a mobile or a browser dialer.

  2. 2

    Dial Sweden's country code, 46.

  3. 3

    Drop the leading 0 from the Swedish number: the mobile 070-123 45 67 becomes 70 123 45 67, and the Stockholm landline 08-123 456 78 becomes 8 123 456 78.

  4. 4

    Dial the remaining digits as written, for example 011 46 70 123 45 67, which is +46 70 123 45 67 in international format.

  5. 5

If the number starts with 020, stop: it is a domestic freephone line that cannot be reached from abroad, so look for the organization's regular number.

The leading 0 is a trunk prefix for calls inside Sweden and is always dropped after +46; the hyphen in Swedish formatting (08-123 456 78) simply marks where the area code ends. Mobiles are always 9 digits after +46, while landlines run 7 to 9 digits after +46 because area codes vary in length - Wikipedia. 020 freephone numbers cannot be reached from abroad, and some foreign carriers refuse 0771 numbers, so use the organization's geographic number instead. Short codes such as 112, 1177 or 114 14 are not international numbers and only work from a phone inside Sweden - PTS.

What trips people up when calling Sweden

Swedish 020 freephone numbers cannot be reached from abroad. They are free to call inside Sweden only, and organizations that must be reachable from other countries, for example to block a lost bank card, publish an ordinary geographic number for that purpose - Wikipedia (Swedish). The 077 shared-cost range is a second trap: some carriers, especially abroad, refuse calls to 0771 numbers, which is why the student-finance agency CSN gives foreign callers a Sundsvall (060) switchboard number instead - CSN. If a Swedish agency, bank or insurer lists only an 020 or 0771 number, look for its regular 08 or other geographic line.

Sweden fights phone fraud at the network level. Phone fraud has become more common in Sweden and much of it relies on spoofing, faking a caller ID so the call seems to come from someone else. Since 4 November 2024 operators must stop calls from abroad that appear to come from Swedish landline numbers, and since 3 March 2025 calls from abroad showing Swedish mobile numbers are checked and stopped unless the number is genuinely roaming - PTS. In March 2026 PTS confirmed that Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre all comply - PTS. An honest US caller ID passes through, but PTS still urges everyone to stay vigilant, so a quick text saying who is about to call makes a pickup more likely.

The Swedish landline is disappearing. Private fixed-line subscriptions fell by nearly 70% in four years, from 742,000 in 2021 to 234,000 at the end of 2025, in a country of about 5 million households - PTS. An old 08 or 031 number for a grandparent may simply be disconnected; the reliable way to reach almost anyone is their 07x mobile.

Landline numbers have no fixed length. Sweden is divided into 264 area codes, and a small town's code can be four digits including the 0 (0980 for Kiruna) while Stockholm's is two (08) - PTS. Local numbers run from five to eight digits, so a number that looks short may be complete; do not pad it.

Reading a Swedish number: the 0, the hyphen and 264 area codes

A Swedish number written for domestic use has three parts: the trunk 0, the area code (riktnummer) and the subscriber number, usually with a hyphen after the area code, as in 08-123 456 78 for Stockholm or 031-123 45 67 for Gothenburg. The 0 is a national prefix used only inside Sweden - PTS. In international form it disappears and the area code follows +46 directly: +46 8 123 456 78 and +46 31 123 45 67.

Stockholm's short code has a history. In the early 1990s a dozen former area codes around the capital were folded into 08 to free the 07 range for mobile phones and other non-geographic services, which is why 08 now covers greater Stockholm and why Stockholm is the only place with eight-digit subscriber numbers - Wikipedia. Elsewhere the pattern is simple: bigger cities got shorter codes (031 Gothenburg, 040 Malmö, 018 Uppsala) and small towns got longer ones (0980 Kiruna, 0498 Gotland).

The non-geographic ranges are worth recognizing on sight: 070, 072, 073, 076 and 079 are mobile, 010 is location-independent, 075 personal numbering, 077 shared-cost, 020 freephone, and 0900 (information), 0939 (other services) and 0944 (entertainment) premium-rate - PTS. Numbers starting 071 are mobile broadband or machine-to-machine lines that support data and rarely voice - Wikipedia.

Your number is your wallet: Swish, BankID and caution

In Sweden a mobile number is also a payment address. Swish, launched in 2012 by six large Swedish banks, connects each user's phone number to a bank account so money arrives within seconds, and it relies on the Mobile BankID identification app - Wikipedia. It is close to universal: in the Riksbank's latest survey 91% of respondents had used Swish in the past month, up from 82% in 2023 - Sveriges Riksbank.

That link between number, identity and money is exactly why the phone is a fraud target. PTS describes spoofing as a common way to try to trick people into handing over personal information that can then be used for fraud - PTS. The practical rule for family calls is simple: a genuine relative never needs anyone to open BankID or approve a Swish payment during a call, and older parents should hang up on anyone who asks.

For callers in the US, the lesson is to ask for the 07x mobile. It is the number Swedes carry everywhere and the one their payments and identity hang on, while the home landline, where one still exists, is increasingly an afterthought.

Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre: four networks, portable numbers

Four operators carry almost all Swedish mobile subscriptions. At the end of 2025 Telia held 30.3%, Tele2 25.8%, Telenor 20.5% and Hi3G (Tre) 19.1%, together 96% of the market, with Tre the one gaining share - PTS. Numbers move freely between them, and PTS maintains a lookup of ported numbers precisely because the 07x prefix no longer tells you which network a phone is on - PTS. For a caller abroad this changes nothing: an 070 number on Tre is dialed exactly like one on Telia.

The fixed network has changed even more. Of the 698,000 fixed-line subscriptions left at the end of 2025, 89% ran over IP-based connections such as fiber or cable, and only about 77,000 still used traditional copper lines - PTS. Most of those lines now belong to businesses rather than homes, which is one more reason a person's mobile is the number worth having.

When Sweden goes quiet: July, Midsummer and the Christmas Eves

Swedish law gives employees 25 days of annual leave and, unless agreed otherwise, a holiday period of at least four consecutive weeks between June and August - Sveriges riksdag. With so much of the workforce off in the same summer months, business calls placed in July are the ones most likely to meet an out-of-office message. Family calls are the opposite: relatives are off work and easier to catch on their mobiles.

Two kinds of days matter more than the calendar suggests. Midsummer Day is legally the Saturday between 20 and 26 June, and National Day on 6 June is also a public holiday - Sveriges riksdag. But Swedes celebrate on the eve: Midsummer Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are de facto holidays that employers almost always treat as days off - Wikipedia. In 2026 Midsummer Eve fell on Friday 19 June.

So 24 December, not the 25th, is the day Swedish families are gathered around the table. If you want to wish everyone a merry Christmas at once, that evening in Sweden (around noon ET) is the moment; for a longer catch-up, pick a quieter day.

Questions about calling Sweden

What is the country code for Sweden, and do I drop the 0?

Sweden's country code is +46, and yes, you drop the leading 0, which is only used for calls inside Sweden. A Stockholm number written 08-123 456 78 becomes +46 8 123 456 78, and the mobile 070-123 45 67 becomes +46 70 123 45 67. From a US landline, dial 011 46 and then the number without its 0 - PTS.

How many digits does a Swedish phone number have?

Mobiles are always 10 digits written locally (070-123 45 67), which is 9 digits after +46. Landlines vary: the area code is two to four digits including the 0 and the local number five to eight digits, for 8 to 10 digits in total - Wikipedia. A short number from a small town can therefore be complete, so do not pad it with extra digits.

Why can't I call a Swedish 020 number from the US?

020 numbers are domestic freephone lines that cannot be reached from abroad - Wikipedia (Swedish). Organizations that need to be reachable internationally, for example to block a lost bank card, publish an ordinary geographic number for that. Watch out for 0771 numbers too: some foreign carriers refuse them, which is why the student-finance agency CSN offers callers abroad a 060 switchboard number instead - CSN.

What is the time difference between Sweden and the US?

Sweden is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern and 9 hours ahead of US Pacific for most of the year. Europe switches to summer time on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October, two or three weeks later and one week earlier than the US - European Commission. From 8 to 28 March 2026 and 25 to 31 October 2026 the gap is 5 and 8 hours. Calling 8am to 2pm ET reaches Swedes in their afternoon or early evening.

Why was my call to Sweden blocked when it showed my Swedish number?

Since 4 November 2024 Swedish operators stop calls from abroad that show a Swedish landline number, and since 3 March 2025 they also stop calls from abroad showing a Swedish mobile number unless the number is verifiably in use abroad - PTS. If an app or service outside Sweden displays your Swedish mobile number while your SIM is not roaming abroad, the call looks spoofed and is stopped. Calls showing a normal foreign caller ID are not affected.

Which Swedish prefixes are mobile numbers?

Mobile numbers begin 070, 072, 073, 076 or 079 - PTS. Numbers are portable between Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre, so the prefix does not tell you the operator, and it makes no difference to how you dial. Numbers starting 071 are data-only mobile broadband or machine lines that rarely take voice calls, and 074 numbers are pagers - Wikipedia.
